    摘要: An apparatus for improving the link margin of a communication link includes a variable rate vocoder which decreases the output bit stream rate it produces so as to reduce the amount of information having to be transmit in the communication link. In one embodiment, the variable rate vocoder includes a plurality of vocoder portions, each of which produces a different bit stream rate. The selector is used for selecting among the output bit streams produced by each vocoder. In another embodiment, a logic device is coupled to the output of the vocoder. The logic device, upon receipt of a control signal, truncates the less important bits. The method for improving link margin includes reducing the vocoder output rate thereby reducing the amount of data being transmit in an communication link. The method also includes using increased error correction coding and transmitting at increased per bit power levels to increase link margin. A device knows to increase the link margin whenever it receives a request to do so, which request is based upon poor signal quality.

Broadband information thereby may be transmitted and received in a regulated communications environment, even though a given provider may only be assigned discontinuous frequency bands/segments, none of which is wide enough to carry the entire broadband information.

In accordance with exemplary embodiments, the M seed waveforms may be chosen from a band-limited Gaussian-distributed process and may be used to generate, via an orthogonalization operation a corresponding set of M Gaussian-distributed orthonormal functions substantially devoid of a cyclostationary property.

    摘要: A satellite radiotelephone frequency band can be reused terrestrially by an ancillary terrestrial network even within the same satellite cell, using interference reduction/cancellation techniques. An interference reducer is responsive to a space-based component and to an ancillary terrestrial network. The interference reducer is configured to reduce interference in wireless communications that are received by the space-based component from first radiotelephones in the satellite footprint over a satellite radiotelephone frequency band using wireless communications that are received by the ancillary terrestrial network from selected ones of second radiotelephones in the satellite footprint over the satellite radiotelephone frequency band and/or wireless communications that are transmitted by the ancillary terrestrial network to the second radiotelephones in the satellite footprint over the satellite radiotelephone frequency band. The interference reducer may include a prefilter that is configured to determine the selected ones of the second radiotelephones.

Wireless communications are also transmitted from the base station to the at least two radioterminals over a forward link using a forward link alphabet that has more symbols than the return link alphabet. The co-channel signals are deciphered at the receiver, while the radioterminals can use a smaller return link alphabet, which can reduce the power dissipation at the radioterminals.
