An elevator/threaded shaft dispensing package for a solid stick-form product. The package has a refill cartridge designed to telescope into a reusable base. The base is tubular and has a threaded shaft axially oriented within it through a central aperture at its bottom where the shaft is connected to a hand wheel. The cartridge holds the product in a tubular body which preferably has a non-circular cross-section. A push plate is disposed in the bottom of the cartridge and the top of the cartridge preferably has a downwardly extending annular collar on its exterior. The package has a telescoping elevator system disposed within it which includes a platform which abuts against the push plate and an internally threaded neck below the platform. The internally threaded neck receives the threaded shaft in threaded telescoping relation. When the hand wheel is turned in a predetermined direction the elevator system advances towards the top, pushing the product in the cartridge up and out of the package so the consumer can have access. The package is able to reset the elevator to its lowermost position when it is in its uppermost position without manually rotating the hand wheels.

The present invention relates to improved product dispensers for various spreadable products, including fluids, suspensions, lotions, creams, emulsions, and gels. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the dispenser is in the form of an improved roll-on type applicator with an enlarged application/distribution surface in the form of a dome with an aperture for exposing a portion of the rotating element. As product is expressed from the gap between the element and dome, it follows the surface of the element into contact with the desired surface and is thereby applied to this surface. Excess product not applied to the desired surface by the element either follows the element surface through the gap between the element and the dome back into the container or is sheared from the element surface by the edge of the aperture in the dome. This sheared-off product flows onto the dome surface or contacts other pans of the desired receiving surface and is distributed by the application/distribution surface of the dome, which functions both as a secondary applicator for this undistributed product and as a primary distributor for evening out the total product distribution on the desired surface, thus providing an improved means of uniformly applying and distributing product dispensed by the rotating element. The resulting roll-on applicator enables the product to be more easily applied in a consistent, less messy fashion, and the simplicity of the package construction equates to a very user-friendly package which is cost effective to produce and reliable in operation.

The present invention relates to improved product dispensers for various products, including solids, gels, semi-solids, and other substantially solid products. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the dispenser is in the form of an improved twist-up type dispenser with an application/distribution surface in the form of a mesh applicator head for covering the exposed end of a solid stick of product. The dispenser includes a force-limiting mechanism to limit the force exerted by the product on the mesh applicator head during pre-loading to prevent extrusion of the product. The dispenser further includes a force-maintaining mechanism to maintain the surface of the product in continuous intimate contact with the mesh applicator head during the application process. The surface of the product exposed via the apertures is sheared off in conventional fashion, and the mesh provides for a more even distribution of the product than conventional solid stick-type dispensers. The resulting dispenser provides application and distribution properties superior to current solid-stick dispensers and enables the product to be more easily applied in a consistent, less messy fashion.

A swivel up package for a deodorant or antiperspirant having specialized sealing which prevents leakage of product, in either its molten or volatile state, during manufacture, shipment and storage by containing all of the product within or above the elevator. The preferred package has a body of an oval or circular cross-section with an open top and a closed bottom. The bottom has a centralized aperture adapted to receive a spindle having a screw shaft disposed within the body and a dial or handwheel disposed outside the body. Also disposed within the body of the package is the elevator having a threaded central hub that is in engagement with the screw shaft. The periphery of the elevator is sealed along the internal surface of the body of the package. Further sealing is provided between the hub/threaded shaft interface when the elevator is in its lowermost position. The elevator has a reservoir to receive molten product during the fill process. The seals are such that flow of air and molten product to the reservoirs is possible only through the top of the package. The volumetric capacity is at least as great as the volume intermediate the fill line of the package, filled in its upright condition with the product in a molten or liquid form, and the inner surface of a forming means used to shape the top of the product. There is also provided a fill/invert process for manufacturing a cosmetic stick-type product using the package described above.

A flexible multilayer label adapted for application to deformable thermoplastic packages, with such label being impervious to water and sufficiently resilient to avoid permanent deformation upon deflection. The label includes a thermoplastic stress-compensating stratum having a relatively elastic structure which has a Young's Modulus less than about 2800 Kg/cm.sup.2 and a lower surface adapted to be bonded to the outer surface of the thermoplastic package during in-mold labeling procedures. The label further includes a thermoplastic label stratum having a Young's Modulus which exceeds about 7030 Kg/cm.sup.2 and a smooth label surface. The label stratum is laminated to the upper surface of the stress-compensating stratum. The stress-compensating stratum structure accommodates the thermal stresses and package shrinkage inherent in such in-mold labeling procedures, as well as stresses imposed by deformation of the package in use. As a result of such accommodating capabilities, the label surface of the label stratum is effectively isolated from such stresses and shrinkage and remains substantially smooth, and the laminated bonds between the label stratum, the stress-compensating stratum, and the deformable package remain substantially intact.

A tamper-evident closure for sealing a package cooperates with a separately applied indicator ring, which is torn apart during the opening of the package, so that a portion of the indicator ring drops clear of the closure to indicate that the closure has been turned at least partially off of the package. The indicator ring has a lower mounting portion and an upper ratchet and indicating portion which is connected to the lower mounting portion of the ring by a series of frangible connectors which are ruptured as the cap is removed.

A dispensing container for solid stick-type products is described which is adapted to be bottom filled with molten solid stick-type product while in a completely assembled condition. The dispensing container includes a substantially tubular container body having an open upper end and a base member with an aperture formed therethrough mounted in its lower end. A cup-shaped closure cap telescopes over the upper end of the dispensing container. A threaded follower having an at least partially open skeletal structure adapted to permit axial flow of molten solid-stick product therethrough during filling operations is slidably and non-rotatably disposed within the container body for axial movement therewithin. Means are provided to manually vary the axial position of the follower within the container body, with those varying means including an externally threaded screw stem having cooperative engagement with the follower, rotating means disposed on the lower exterior of the container body and extending into the container body through the aperture formed in the base member, and skeletal structured mounting means attaching the screw stem to the rotating means thereby permitting axial flow of molten solid-stick product therethrough during filling operations. The rotating means is also formed with a bore providing fluid communication from the exterior to the interior of the container body. The fully assembled dispensing container can be bottom filled with molten product and requires no further assembly or closure thereafter.
