摘要: A seating system includes a seat, with structures for supporting a user thereon, and actuators. Each actuator includes a deformable shell with an enclosed internal cavity containing a fluid dielectric contained, a pair of electrodes disposed on opposing sides of the deformable shell. The actuators are integrated into the structures and configured for providing at least one function, such as haptic feedback, seat adjustment, alert notification, vibratory signal, user input receiving, and massage function. A portion of the plurality of actuators may be enclosed within an encapsulating shell to form an encapsulated sheet of actuators. Each actuator may be a part of a button-on-demand system, wherein the actuator is normally in a collapsed position such that a user-facing surface of the encapsulating shell is substantially flat and, when activated by a user, the actuator is configured to expand such that the encapsulating shell is raised to form a button.

Further, the method includes modifying at least one of length, width, diameter, and shape of the deformable shell and/or the first and second electrodes, a volume of the fluid dielectric, permittivity, thickness, and material of the deformable shell, and a partition within the deformable shell such that the actuator so modified exhibits a second operational performance. The operational performance includes force as a function of stroke, actuator breakdown strength, direction of actuation, uniformity of deformation of the deformable shell, actuator flexibility, and stroke as a function of actuator system volume.

摘要: An actuator system includes an actuator with a deformable shell defining a pouch, a fluid dielectric contained within the pouch, and first and second electrodes disposed over opposing sides of the pouch, each electrode having two long edges and two short edges. The system also includes a power source for providing a voltage between the electrodes. The electrodes cover 50 to 90% of the first and second sides, respectively, of the pouch, and a gap is defined between long edges of the pouch and the electrodes such that, upon application of the voltage at one of the short edges of the electrodes, respectively, the electrodes selectively zip together from the one of the short edges toward an opposing one of the short edges. The system may also include a support structure for enabling the actuator to maintain its shape regardless of the voltage provided by the power source.

摘要: An actuator system includes a sleeve for accommodating an appendage of a user therein, actuators, and a power source. Each actuator includes a deformable shell defining a pouch including an enclosed internal cavity with a fluid dielectric contained therein, and first and second electrodes disposed over opposing sides of the pouch. The power source provides a voltage between the first and second electrodes. The sleeve includes features for distributing the actuators within the sleeve in a predetermined manner. Application of the voltage produces directional forces on the appendage. In embodiments, the first and second electrodes are disposed over the pouch such that, when the actuator is activated, the fluid dielectric is displaced in a length direction within the pouch, and the features in the sleeve may or may not align the actuators such that the length direction of the actuators are in alignment.
