A driver circuit for driving a piezoelectric element, including a charging circuit having a DC power source and a coil for charging the piezoelectric element, and a discharging circuit for discharging the piezoelectric element. When the piezoelectric element is charged, a first switching device in the charging circuit is held on until a voltage of the element reaches a predetermined level below a line voltage of the power source. A second switching device provided in the discharging circuit is turned on at the time when the first switching device is turned off or at a predetermined later time, and is turned off by the time when said first switching device is again turned on next activation of the piezoelectric element. A voltage limiter inhibits the voltage of the piezoelectric element element from exceeding the predetermined level. The driver circuit may be used for a dot-matrix printer, which may be adapted to discharge the piezoelectric element for a comparatively long time where a distance between adjacent two dots to be formed is larger than a predetermined value.

A voltage controller connected to the pressure detector and the piezoelectric element is provided for controlling a voltage applied to the piezoelectric element, based on an output of the pressure detector, such that the printing pressure coincides with a predetermined value. Since the printing pressure is varied with a temperature of the piezoelectric element, the voltage may be controlled based on the temperature of the piezoelectric element detected by a temperature sensor.

The first conducting wire is set to positive electric potential, and the second conducting wire is set to ground electric potential. A printer of the type in which printing is performed in response to data supplied from a host computer and the printer is selectively rendered in an on-line mode enabling to receive the data from the host computer and in an off-line mode disabling to receive the data therefrom. A recording paper is firstly moved beyond a reference line by a desired length corresponding to a desired amount of upper margin of the recording paper. The recording paper is then moved backwardly by a distance between a print position and the reference line, whereby the desired amount of upper margin is reserved when printing is started. In another aspect of the invention, an elongated, web-like recording sheet is moved toward a cutting blade and is cut at an appropriate line on the sheet. Then, the sheet is backwardly moved by a predetermined distance toward the print position.
