Abstract:
New high molecular weight thermoplastic polycarbonates contain the residues of a di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkane and/or cycloalkane (generically referred to hereinafter as a di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkane) and the residues of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or another aromatic dihydroxy compound other than a di-(monohydroxyaryl) sulphone (generically referred to hereinafter as another dihydroxy compound). They may be made (a) by reacting a mixture of a di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkane and another dihydroxy compound with a diester of carbonic acid, preferably in presence of a basic catalyst; (b) by reacting phosgene with a mixture of a di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkane and another dihydroxy compound, e.g. in an aqueous alkali and/or organic solvent solution and in presence of a quaternary ammonium base or salt as catalyst; (c) by reacting a di-(mono hydroxyaryl) alkane or a mixture thereof with another dihydroxy compound with a bis-chlorocarbonic ester of another dihydroxy compound preferably in presence of an inert solvent and an acid-binding material (e.g. a tertiary amine); or (d) by reacting a bis-chlorocarbonic acid ester of a di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkane or a mixture thereof and a bis-chlorocarbonic acid ester of another dihydroxy compound with another dihydroxy compound. Many other dihydroxy compounds are specified including polymethylene glycols and hydrocarbon substituted derivatives thereof; oxy- and thio-alkylene glycols, xylylene glycol; dihydroxy benzenes, diphenyls, naphthalenes, anthracene, dinaphthyls and cyclohexanes and decahydronaphthalene; 2,2-di-(p-hydroxycyclohexyl) propane and hydroxybenzyl alcohols. Some of the polycarbonates are soluble in benzene, toluene, ether, dioxane, acetone, cyclohexanone, ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofurane, methylene chloride, dichloroethane, chloroform and dimethyl formamide. They are useful in the manufacture of mouldings, films, fibres, lacquers and emulsions. Examples disclose the manufacture of polycarbonates from (1), (2) and (7) 2,2 - bis - (4,41 - phenylenechlorocarbonate) propane and ethylene glycol, 2,2-di-(4-hydroxycyclohexyl) propane or p-xylylene glycol (3), (4), (5), (6), (8), (9) and (10). Phosgene, 2,2-di-(p-hydroxyphenyl) propane and hydroquinone, 4,41 - dihydroxydiphenyl, 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene, resorcinol, 1,6-dihydroxynaphthalene or hexanediol-1,6 (11) or (13). Diphenyl carbonate, 2,2 - di - (p - hydroxyphenyl) propane and hexanediol - 1,6 or hydroquinone. (12) 2,2 - bis - (4,41 - phenylene phenylcarbonate)-propane, 2,2 - di - (p - hydroxyphenyl) propane and resorcinol. The invention of Specification 800,815 is disclaimed.
