Abstract: 1,093,188. Separating fuel and water. BENDIX CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1964 [Jan. 13, 1964], No. 51921/64. Heading B1D. A mixture of fuel and water enters housing 38 at 32 and the fuel flows outwards through pervious hydrophobic concentric screens 50 to 64 which progressively hold back the water in steps as shown, and the fuel and water leave by respective outlets comprising selfstarting siphons which start at levels F 1 , W 1 and stop at levels F 2 , W 2 . The water siphon comprises concentric tubes 72, 74, the fuel siphon comprises an annular space 88 in the housing wall and three circumferentially spaced outlet tubes 94. The screens may be wire coated with P.T.F.E., whose aperture sizes (given) may decrease stepwise outwardly, either by varying the screen mesh size, the coating thickness or the wire diameter, and all or alternate screens may be pleated (Fig. 4, not shown). The alternate pleated screens may be non-hydrophobic and merely reduce splashing Alternatively the outer screens could comprise helically wound P.T.F.E. ribbon type elements. Specification 1,045,347. In use, the device is connected to a coalescer unit (14) (Fig. 1, not shown), which receives fuel pumped from a tank (10) and delivers a purified fuel fraction to an I.C. engine, e.g. in a military tank. A restriction (36) determines the fraction of retained water and fuel, sufficient to deal with the maximum expected water content, which is drawn from coalescer (14), upstream of the outlet filter element therein. The fuel discharge from the housing 38 returns to fuel tank (10). Air is vented from 46 to the fuel tank which has a normal vent. The coalescer 14 may comprise an inward flow assembly of concentric resin-impregnated fibre element, cloth, fibre glass or nylon batt, pleated paper element, the last of which might be replaced by a washer type edge filter or sintered metal element. The opening to the fuel-water discharge sump is from outside the latter element, Specification 825,192.

Abstract: 1,000,263. Filters for liquids. BENDIX CORPORATION. June 19, 1962 [Nov. 24, 1961], No. 23616/62. Heading B1D. In filtering apparatus comprising a tank 10, Fig. 1, containing a plurality of filter units 22, each unit includes a perforated tube 32, Fig. 2, supporting an edge-type filter element 30 which is formed by a stack of annular discs, or edgewound ribbon, made of fibrous or non-fibrous material, e.g. paper or cellulose, the element being initially compressed by liquid pressure and a spring 34 acting upon a plate 36 which has resilient prongs 38 for engagement with projections 40 whereby it is subsequently retained in a permanent position, Fig. 3 (not shown), in accordance with the maximum rate of flow of liquid through the unit so as to compress the filter element by a corresponding constant amount. Projections 40 may be in the form of separate rings or a helix, Fig. 4 (not shown). The end 42 of tube 32 has a sealing ring 44 and engages with a hole in a partition 16 which is situated below an inlet port 12 in tank 10. Liquid discharged from the interior of each filter unit leaves the apparatus through a port 14. A plate 24 retains the units in their mounted positions. Specifications 648,466 and 922,322 are referred to.

Abstract: A hollow tubular separator element for separating water from fuel in the second stage of a filter-separator consists of a ribbon of resinimpregnated paper, cellulose or the like having rugosities extending across both its surfaces, the ribbon being wound edgewise simultaneously with a narrower or perforated strip which includes, or consists of, a hydrophobic (e.g. P. T. F. E. or a polyester) material. After winding, the parts of the surfaces of ribbon which are in contact are bonded together by heating to set the resin. On setting, the ribbon is impervious to liquid, but interstices between the convolutions are provided by the rugosities. Where the strip is narrower than the ribbon, one of the strip edges preferably is aligned with that edge of the ribbon which is at the inlet surface of the element.
