Abstract: A control system and circuitry in an electric motor articulated hospital bed for achieving electrical isolation between the patient''s hand control unit and the higher current motor circuitry and for protecting him against shock is disclosed wherein an optical linkage is employed using photosensitive elements (photoresistors) and low voltage lamps. For each controlled function (e.g. knee up or down) lighting of the lamps changes the resistance of the photoresistor to cause a solid state circuit to turn on one, but never both, of a pair of Triacs each of which is in series with a different directional coil (clockwise or counterclockwise) of a motor and the electric mains (e.g. 120v, 60 hz. a.c.). Two or more motors may be controlled from a single electrically isolated hand held unit. In one embodiment, a low voltage transformer output is switched by the patient, in another embodiment a small d.c. battery is so switched and in a third embodiment the patient controls a mechanical linkage to mask or unmask remotely located photoresistor from a light source.

Abstract: A control system for a breath tester is disclosed. The tester includes a chamber in which a breath sample is stored, a detector unit positioned to test breath therein and means for shielding the detector unit from the chamber while breath is flowing into the chamber and for unshielding the detector unit thereafter to provide a relatively quiescent breath sample to the detector. A purge pump is also provided. The control system includes means for sensing the breath flow into the chamber during the test and for automatically cutting off that flow, timing a period to allow a quiescent state to be reached and only then allowing the detector unit to be unshielded. It also employs the initial offcycling of a thermostatically controlled heater, after the turning-on of the tester, to indicate the approach of operating conditions and includes interlocks to prevent improper operation and to ensure consistent results.

Abstract: A multiplex system for controlling and sensing various component parts such as head lights, engine temperature, fuel level, and turn signal lights is disclosed. The system employs a single twowire cable to communicate both power and signals between such components and a central control and metering console which may be the instrument dash console. Time multiplex is employed using a reverse polarity for clock pulses from that of the information pulses. Both analog and digital data may be accommodated by using pulse-width modulation as well as bi-level modulation. Receiving units employ a N delay one-shot triggered by the clock pulse and an AND circuit driven by the output of the N delay one-shot and the signal present on the single signal wire, to drive a one-shot which controls a switching device. Similar circuitry is employed for the digital transmitting and the analog transmitter and receiver. A socket input unit for tapping into the single cable in parallel to other input units by employing a piercing plug is disclosed.
