A method and apparatus for utilizing voice channel transceivers as temporary scanning receivers in a handoff event for a cellular radiotelephone system is disclosed. Voice channel transceiver identifications are stored in link lists according to priority, sectorization, and last use. When a signal strength measurement is required, those cell sectors having available voice channel transceivers are identified and a table providing optimum transceiver selection is utilized to select those voice channel transceivers which will make the signal strength measurement.

The method of conveying control and program information between cellular radiotelephone controllers and of detecting information errors is disclosed. When a program memory information error is detected, a predetermined amount of memory information is conveyed from a first controller to a second controller. If a comparison of checksums of a predetermined amount of memory information stored at the second controller and the memory information received from the first controller matches, additional memory information is conveyed. If a match is not found, the predetermined amount of memory information is reconveyed from the first controller to the second controller.

The method and apparatus for interfacing between a cell site controller, a cell system controller, and the radio transceivers of a cellular radiotelephone system is disclosed. To convey control information to the radio transceivers, the cell site controller enables one of a redundant pair of control data buses to a selected transceiver by placing an enable signal on the enable line unique to the selected transceiver. Control data is then coupled to the common enabled control data bus for conveyance to the selected transceiver. The transceiver mutes the message data port it may be using and transponds the control data information it receives. When the enable signal is removed, the transceiver unmutes the message data port. Program information is transferred between the cell system controller and cell site controllers as memory blocks which may be retransferred upon detection of a checksum mismatch.

In one embodiment, the method includes identifying a response zone 115 associated with an emergency event and dispatching emergency responders 114, 116, and 118 having communication devices 234a-234m to the response zone 115. The dispatching procedure includes adjusting access of the emergency responder communication devices to shared communications resources. Adjusting access to shared communication resources includes identifying one or more of the emergency responder communication devices to be dispatched to the identified response zone and specifying a quality of service (QoS) priority level of at least one of the identified emergency responder communication devices. Adjusting access to shared communication resources further includes specifying a QoS priority level for communication devices located within the identified response zone.

The narrowband communication system preempts (414) lower priority subscribers when a higher priority (408) high-speed data terminal requires access to the system and a requested channel assignment is not available (412). The complexity of a high-speed data terminal communication chipset is reduced by a receiver design that minimizes the range of frequencies that are required to be demodulated.

Satellite power is conserved by allowing time for a subscriber unit to respond, after which subsequent ring-alerts directed at that subscriber are canceled. When a gateway receives a request for a ring-alert, the satellite and the antenna beams are identified which are currently serving the location of the subscriber unit being called. The satellite is provided a list of antenna beams and proceeds to broadcast ring-alerts directed at subscriber units within the identified antenna beams. Unsent ring-alerts are canceled when responses from the subscriber units are received.
