A roller is provided for a pressure treatment of a web of paper, textile, plastic film, and is composed of a rotary hollow cylinder which can be distinctly deformed under the effect of line forces in the roll nip. The roller includes a non-rotary cross-head which penetrates the rotary hollow cylinder over its length. On the side of the roll nip, hydraulic supporting elements are provided which can be pressed against the inside circumference of the hollow cylinder in the manner of piston/cylinder units. These supporting elements have a length of not more than 20 cm in the longitudinal direction of the cross-head, and are closely arranged next to one another in the longitudinal direction of the cross-head. The supporting elements can be driven independently of one another at least in several groups. A sealing strip is also provided which continues in one piece over several supporting elements. The supporting elements rest against the sealing strip from below, and the sealing strip acts against the inside circumference of the hollow cylinder, at the top. At the top, the sealing strip has a bearing pocket above each supporting element. The edges at the adjacent sides of bearing pockets which follow one another in the longitudinal direction of the roller are formed by a transverse edge common to both bearing pockets.

The tightening roll can be tilted to reduce roll vibrations by tightening the felt to set vibratory marks formed in the felt at an angle relative to the transverse width of the felt and the roll gap. A controllable positioning device is provided which includes a motor operated by a controller during predetermined time intervals or as a function of actual vibrations sensed at the pair of rolls forming the roll gap to automatically vary the tilt angle.

One boundary of the housing is arched concavely in accordance with typical roll diameters to enable the blet to run freely in this region outside the housing and press against a roll surface in a looping region to drive the belt as the roll rotates. The inner side of the belt facing away from the roll may be blackened and the energy radiated therefrom may be measured by a radiation pyrometer to determine the temperature of the roll.

The calender arrangement comprises two sets of rolls through which the paper web is conducted in succession. Each set of rolls comprises a highly heated hard roll and a soft roll. A cooling device arranged upstream of at least one of the nips formed between the roll sets restricts the amount of heat transfer to the inner layers of the paper web and the attendant, undesirable partial plasticization of the inner layers of the web.

A hydrostatically supported roll has several hydrostatic support elements supporting the inner circumference of a rotating hollow roll. The hydrostatic elements are supported on the stationary crosshead that extends through the rotating roll to form a clearance space therewith. Each hydrostatic element has support pockets supplied with a first pressurized fluid via choke canals and branch lines connected to a flow-controlled pump delivering a constant volume of first pressurized liquid, regardless of the counterpressure in the support pockets. The first pressurized liquid fed to the support pockets is temperature-controlled. The support pockets are separated from essentially closed pressure chambers, which are supplied with a second pressure-controlled pressurized liquid from separate feedlines for pressing the hydrostatic elements against the inner circumference of the hollow roll to support same. The second pressurized liquid is not communicated to the inner circumference of the hollow roll. Therefore, independent of any pressure change in the pressure chambers, the same quantity of first pressurized liquid passes over the edges of the support pockets to ensure that the amount of heat transferred to the inner circumference of the hollow roll remains constant.
