    Abstract: In general, in one aspect, a hearing aid has an ANR circuit and an ear tip that acoustically occludes the ear. Such a hearing aid provides greater gain to sounds than would be stable in the same hearing aid with a vented ear tip. The ear tip and the ANR circuit in combination attenuate sounds reaching the ear canal through the hearing aid to a first level. The hearing aid detects sounds arriving at a microphone, amplifies those sounds, and provides the amplified sounds to the ear canal at a second level and later in time than the same sounds arrive at the ear canal through the ear tip. The first level is at least 14 dB greater than the second level, such that the amplified sounds do not interact with the passive sounds to result in spectral combing.

    Abstract: The subject technology can be embodied in a retaining structure which is configured to engage with external structures to hold an earpiece in position. The retaining structure includes a first portion forming a loop and having an upper end and a lower end. The upper end of the first portion is coupled to a top surface of a body of the earpiece and the lower end of the first portion is coupled to a bottom surface of the earpiece. The retaining structure also includes a second portion having an upper end and a lower end, wherein the lower end of the second portion is coupled to the loop formed by the first portion, and the upper end of the second portion extends from the earpiece. The top and bottom surfaces are located on substantially opposite sides of the body in a direction along a plane of the retaining structure.

    Abstract: An earpiece includes a body having an acoustic driver and an output aperture. A sealing structure extends from a region adjacent the output aperture to hold the output aperture adjacent to the entrance of a user's ear canal. An acoustic nozzle having an acoustic passage conducts sound waves from the acoustic driver to the output aperture. The acoustic passage has a proximal end adjacent the acoustic driver and a distal end adjacent the output aperture. First acoustic impedance is provided at the proximal end of the acoustic nozzle adjacent the acoustic driver. Second acoustic impedance is provided at the distal end of the acoustic nozzle adjacent the output aperture. The volume of the acoustic nozzle and the first and second acoustic impedances are selected to control resonance in the user's ear canal when the sealing structure is engaged with the entrance to the user's ear canal.

    Abstract: A positioning and retaining structure for an in-ear earpiece. An outer leg and an inner leg are attached to each other at an attachment end and attached to a body of the earpiece at the other end. The outer leg lies in a plane. The positioning and retaining structure have a stiffness that is greater when force is applied to the attachment end in a counterclockwise direction in the plane of the outer leg than when force is applied to the attachment end in a clockwise direction in the plane of the outer leg. The positioning and retaining structure position an earpiece associated with the earpiece in a user's ear and retains the earpiece in its position.

    Abstract: A retaining member for an earphone includes an outer layer of a first material surrounding an inner core of a second material. The retaining member extends from the earphone, and is curved to generally match the shape the antihelix of a human ear. The second material is harder than the first material, providing a stiffness to the retaining member that causes it to apply an upward and backward force against the antihelix when the retaining member is bent to fit under the antihelix of a particular user's ear.

    Abstract: An active noise reduction earphone. The earphone includes structure for positioning and retaining the earphone in the ear of a user without a headband, active noise reduction circuitry including an acoustic driver with a nominal diameter greater than 10 mm oriented so that a line parallel to, or coincident with, an axis of the acoustic driver and that intersects a centerline of the nozzle intersects the centerline of the nozzle at angle θ>±30 degrees. A microphone is positioned adjacent an edge of the acoustic driver. The earphone is configured so that a portion of the acoustic driver is within the concha of a user and another portion of the acoustic driver is outside the concha of the user when the earphone is in position.
