    摘要: A private communication network through which a plurality of member users communicate using the public switched telephone network (PSTN) is disclosed herein. Each member user utilizes either a modified land line telephone directly connected to PSTN, or uses a modified mobile telephone operatively coupled to the PSTN through a wireless communication system. The private communication network includes network call manager having a telephone network interface for establishing a telephone connection with each of a plurality of telephone lines of the PSTN. Each of the plurality of telephone lines is associated with one of the plurality of member users. The network call manager further includes a switch matrix, coupled to the telephone network interface, for providing an information signal received from an active member user over a selected telephone line to the remaining non-active member users. A network call manager controller identifies the active member user the basis of push-to-talk (PTT) request signals received from the member users'telephones over the plurality of telephone lines. The telephone set of each member user will typically be capable of both standard telephone operation as well as of PTT operation over the private communication network. The security of the PTT private network may be enhanced by configuring each telephone set for encryption of all such reverse link transmissions, as well as for corresponding decryption of the forward link information from the active member user.

    摘要: To reduce the power consumption of a remote unit in a dispatch system the remote unit enters a dormant state. A base station transmits a forward link broadcast signal and monitors a common access channel. A first remote unit continually receives and decodes the forward link broadcast signal and determines whether said forward link broadcast signal comprises active signals. If the remote unit determines that the forward link broadcast signal comprises no active signals for some a duration T.sub.1, the first remote unit enters a dormant mode. In the dormant mode the remote unit sporadically receives and decodes said forward link broadcast signal. If this remote unit or any other remote unit on the same net presses a push to talk button, it transmits a message on the common access channel. In response, every remote unit on the net which is in a dormant state exits the dormant state and continually monitors the forward link broadcast signal.

    摘要: A method and apparatus to provide access to a dispatch system is disclosed. A communications manager (40) grants an exclusive system talker privilege to one remote unit (10) in the system at a time. After a remote unit (10) requests and is designated as the exclusive system talker, no other remote unit (20, 22) may transmit for a first pre-determined amount of time. After the first pre-determined time has elapsed, any other remote unit (20, 22) may request the exclusive system talker privilege and become the exclusive system talker. The exclusive system talker privilege is revoked by the communications manager (40) to any remote unit who retains the exclusive system talker privilege for more than a second pre-determined amount of time. The exclusive system talker privilege is also revoked upon the release of a push-to-talk button on a remote unit (10). Furthermore, a base station (44) in communication with a remote unit (10) designated as the exclusive system talker will generate a surrogate relinquishment request to the communications manager (40) if the exclusive system talker travels outside the coverage area of the system, loses power, or is destroyed.

    摘要: In a dispatch system, power of the forward link broadcast channel transmitted from a base station is controlled such that the power level is the minimum necessary and such that transmission of the forward link broadcast channel is terminated if no remote unit is located within the coverage area of the base station. In addition to transmitting a forward link broadcast signal, the base station monitors an access channel. A first remote unit in the base station coverage area receives and decodes the forward link broadcast signal. The first remote unit determines a signal quality of said forward link broadcast signal. If the signal quality is unacceptable, the remote unit transmits a power request access message. The base station responds to the request by increasing the transmission power of forward link broadcast channel. If no requests are received at the base station, the forward link broadcast channel is slowly decreased to a minimum. Transmission of the forward link broadcast channel may be terminated completely.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for remote control of software and hardware features of a wireless communication device using Short Message Services (SMS). A wireless communication device with SMS capabilities can be remotely configured by sending specifically configured SMS messages. A manufacturer can configure a wireless device to have control over certain features accessible through SMS messages. A configuring SMS message is constructed using a specific format to inform the wireless device of the presence of a feature control message. Predetermined combinations of characters unlikely to occur in normal messages are used as message start and stop delimiters. A series of fields are defined in the SMS message with the fields separated by delimiters distinct from the message start and stop delimiters. Commands may be sent to the wireless device using point-to-point as well as broadcast SMS messages. The wireless device receives the SMS message and identifies it as a feature control command by noting the presence of a message start delimiter. The message is then parsed according to the field delimiters within the message. The wireless device then configures software and hardware features according to the contents of the SMS message fields.

An identification element associated with one in the set of selected optional features enables the main program to interact with the one in the set of selected optional features. A programmer programs the selected optional feature programs into the memory by locating a storage location in the memory. An indicator indicates when the set of selected optional features has been stored in the memory. The memory can further contain a linking element and a pointer to identify storage locations in the memory. The invention allows the set of selected optional features to be stored after the main program is stored in the memory.
