Abstract: An optical coherence tomography (OCT) system comprises: an imaging catheter; a calibration phantom removably arranged at least partially surrounding the distal end of the catheter; and a processor configured to control the catheter to acquire OCT images. The phantom has known dimensions and specific optical properties which provide non-changing calibration fiducials that span the imaging range of the system. The phantom is imaged by the catheter upon first connection to the system. The processor calculates a thickness of the phantom in the OCT image, and preforms z-offset calibration by setting the position of a phantom surface in the OCT image to a known nominal value. The known nominal value is related to one or more of the known thickness of the phantom or a diameter of the catheter sheath or a nominal angle of the light beam or the imaging range of the system.

Abstract: A catheter comprises an imaging core, an inner sheath enclosing the imaging core, an outer sheath surrounding the inner sheath, and a flexible membrane arranged on the outer sheath and configured to deflect in response to intravascular pressure. At least part of the inner sheath and part of the outer sheath are nested within each other. A chamber is defined by the membrane, and the parts of the inner and outer sheaths that are nested within each other. The chamber provides a space into which the membrane is deflected when surrounded by fluids. A processor controls the imaging core to acquire pressure data by scanning the membrane with light transmitted through the chamber, and to acquire image data by scanning a vessel wall with light transmitted through the inner sheath. If the membrane breaks, the chamber prevents fluids from entering the imaging core, and the catheter continues acquiring image data.

Abstract: An apparatus (100) and method (700, 800) for finding a range of lumen clearance, comprises: positioning (802) an imaging probe (160) in a lumen (170) such that the probe tip is positioned to irradiate a target area (172); acquiring a first set of images of an inside of the lumen while performing a non-flush pullback operation (S806) with the probe; analyzing the first set of images to determine a location of the probe tip with respect to a guide catheter; calculating a range of lumen clearance based on the location; and acquiring a second set of images of the inside of the lumen while performing a flush pullback operation only within the calculated range of lumen clearance. Calculating the range of lumen clearance includes calculating a pullback distance from the target area to the distal end of the guide catheter. The method further includes calculating a volume of contrast agent for clearing the calculated pullback distance.
