Abstract: 335,632. British Celanese, Ltd., Bader, W., and Stimson, E. E. July 2, 1929. Carbonic oxide; carbonic acid. - Mixtures of carbon dioxide and hydrogen, especially those obtained by releasing the pressure upon the wash waters used in treating industrial carbon monoxide and hydrogen mixtures, have their hydrogen content reduced or eliminated by treatment with chromite at temperatures above 700‹ C. The gases are passed, after drying if desired and preferably in a rapid stream, over chromite in a steel tube at 800-900‹ C. The reaction results in an increase in the proportion of carbon monoxide in the mixture, which mixture may be used for the manufacture of carbon monoxide by passing it, preferably dried, over hot coke, charcoal, &c.
