摘要:
Balls of silver alloy are internally oxidized and used for the production of electric contacts. The electric contacts produced by using the above internally oxidized balls have much better electric properties than those which are produced by using internally oxidized plate or wire of silver alloy. Further, the above internally oxidized balls have higher ductility than those which are produced by using internally oxidized plate or wire. Composite electric contacts of internally oxidized silver alloy and base metal produced by a cold welding process contain an increased amount of solute-metal by the use of the abovedescribed internally oxidized balls.

A composite electric contact comprising a silver-cadmium oxide alloy as the contact material or element and having a silvercadmium layer integrally formed on the face opposite to the contact face. The concentration of cadmium oxide particles increases from a minimum at the contact face to a maximum toward the face with the silver-cadmium layer.

Process for the preparation of a composite electrical contact material consisting of an alloy composed of 84 to 90 weight percent of silver, 1.0 to 4.0 weight percent of the components consisting of at least two of zinc, tin or antimony, and less than 0.5 weight percent of the intermetallic compound of one of the group 2A elements of the Periodic Table with nickel or cobalt, the balance being cadmium, said alloy being formed into a strip or contact form and subjected to an internal oxidation at a temperature of 700* to 750*C.

A CONTACT METAL HAVING GOOD COLD-PRESSURE BONDING PROPERTIES IS BONDED TO A METAL SUBSTRATE WHICH NORMALLY HAS A LOW PROPENSITY FOR COLD-PRESSURE BONDING. THE CONTACT METAL, E.G. SILVER, IS PLACED ON THE METAL SUBSTRATE, SUCH AS STAINLESS STEEL, AND THE CONTACT METAL IMMEDIATELY COLD DEFORMED BY CONTACT WITH A PUNCH UNTIL A BALANCE IS ACHIEVED BETWEEN THE APPLIED PRESSURE AND THE DEFORMATION RESISTANCE OF THE CONTACT METAL, WHEREBY THE CONTACT METAL IS BROUGHT INTO INTIMATE CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC CONTACT WITH THE SUBSTRATE. IMMEDIATELY THEREAFTER, WHILE THE CONTACT METAL IS STILL UNDER PRESSURE, THE CONTACT METAL IS HEATED TO ABOVE ITS RECRYSTALLIZATION TEMPERATURE AND BELOW ITS MELTING POINT TO COMPLETE THE DEFORMATION OF SAID METAL AND EFFECT METALLURGICAL BONDING TO THE SUBSTRATE.

A RIVET-TYPE BIMETAL CONTACT IS PRODUCED BY COAXIALLY SUPERPOSING A LINEAR PIECE OF A DUCTILE PRECIOUS CONTACT METAL ONTO THE END FACE OF A DIFFERENT DUCTILE METAL WITH ITS OPPOSITE END ANCHORED IN A DIE, THE CONTACT FACES OF THE TWO METALS BEING FRESHLY CUT. THE CONTACT METAL IS AXIALLY UPSET BY APPLYING IMPACT PRESSURE TO DEFORM AND FLATTEN THE SUPERPOSED METALS AT LEAST 20% OF THEIR HEIGHT, AND PREFERABLY AT LEAST 30 OR 50%, TO BRING THE CUT FACES INTO INTIMATE AND CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC CONTACT WHEREBY THE INTERFACE IS INCREASED IN AREA AND EFFECT COLD BONDING OF THE TWO FACES, AND THEN IMMEDIATELY HEATING THE TWO METALS TO AN ELEVATED TEMPERATURE BELOW THE MELTING POINTS
OF THE METALS BUT ABOVE THE RECRYSTALLIZATION TEMPERATURE WHILE UNDER PRESSURE TO COMPLETE THE DEFORMATION AND FORM A HIGH STRENGTH BOND AT THE BIMETAL INTERFACE.

A sintered graphite-containing ferrous-titanium carbide composition is provided which is produced by a liquid phase sintering process, wherein a powder composition comprising a mixture of iron, titanium (e.g. ferro-titanium), cast iron and carbon is pressed into a compact and the compact then heated to above the melting point of the cast iron such that the carbon in the melt reacts with the titanium to form titanium carbide, the amount of carbon being also sufficient to form graphite, such that on cooling, a metallographic structure is obtained comprised of fine grains of precipitated titanium carbide dispersed in a ferrous matrix which also contains precipitated particles of graphite.

A composite electrical contact material consisting of an alloy composed of 6 to 12 weight percent of indium, and 0.5 to 5 weight percent of tin, the balance being silver, said alloy being formed into a strip or electrical contact shape and subjected to internal oxidation. Less than 0.5 weight percent of an element of the iron family is added to the alloy when it contains more than 2.5 weight percent of tin.

A heading machine for joining and shaping, by cold welding under pressure, cut lengths of wire of respectively different metal compositions is disclosed as including means for feeding continuous wires of the different metal compositions, means for severing that short lengths of the different wires, means for positioning and retaining the short lengths in axial alignment with each other, pressure means for forcing the cut ends of the short lengths of wire into abutment to cold weld the short lengths to each other, and shaping means operable to deform and ''''head'''' one end of the joined short wire pieces, these means being mounted on a mounting means which is arranged to be stepped along a path of travel past plural working stationed in uniformly spaced relation.

A method and apparatus are provided for pressure-bonding a precious contact metal selected from the group consisting of silver, platinum, gold, palladium and alloys based on these metals to a metal substrate strip selected from the group consisting of copper, nickel, copper-base and nickel-base alloys to which the contact metal is cold bondable. The invention includes feeding a strip of the metal substrate towards a bonding station comprising upper and lower dies, one die being adapted to apply pressure to the other, producing a freshly cut or fractured surface in a portion of the strip before it reaches the bonding station, freshly cutting or fracturing the piece of precious contact metal, superposing the precious metal against the substrate with their freshly fractured surfaces in contact with each other, and then immediately applying impact pressure to the superposed metal portions by means of the pressure-applying die sufficient to deform the precious metal at least 30 percent of its thickness against the substrate whereby to cold bond the precious metal to the substrate. Precious metal cladded to a base metal of copper, nickel, copper-base and nickel-base alloys may be used as contact metal, the cladded precious metal being freshly fractured through the base metal side for bonding to the metal substrate strip.
