Abstract: Flow deflector apparatus is provided in fuel assemblies of a nuclear reactor to effect mixing of the coolant flowing in channels between adjacent members thereof. The apparatus comprises metal strips containing pre-punched tab projections that are attached to at least some of the members that comprise the fuel assemblies.

Abstract: A gripper device having longitudinally extending gripping means which are movable into and out of gripping engagement and a gripper operating member which is relatively longitudinally movable between first and second positions relative to the gripping means. The gripping means has defined along its length mutually opposed, longitudinally spaced, upper and lower gripping surfaces. These gripping surfaces are each obliquely disposed relative to the longitudinal direction and are the sole engaging surfaces of the gripping means. When the gripper operating member is in the first position, the member continuously applies an obliquely oriented force relative to the gripping means to force the gripping means into gripping engagement and when the gripper operating member is in the second position, the obliquely oriented force is released. Also, means are disclosed for locking the gripper operating member in the first position.

Abstract: A hold-up device for nuclear reactor fuel assemblies which precludes the possibility of axial movement of the assemblies due to hydraulic forces under all thermal and flow conditions in the reactor core region. The fuel assembly is spring loaded against the upper guide structure, and supported so as to allow significant thermal expansion differential between the assembly and its support structure. In a preferred embodiment the fuel assembly lower end fitting alignment posts are extended into the core support structure where each post is supported by a spring contained within a cartridge which is press fitted into the core support plate. The fuel assembly is loaded against the upper guide structure by the hold-up device during installation of the upper guide structure. The device is insensitive to all hydraulic load increases since the flow force ia opposed by the upper guide structure.
