A PROCESS FOR MAKING AGGLOMERATES FROM NON-CAKING OR WEAKLY CAKING COALS WHICH INCLUDES TUMBLING IN A ROTARY KILN, AT AN ELEVATED FORMING TEMPERATURE, CARBONACEOUS MATERIAL OBTAINED FROM THE COAL FEEDSTOCK AND A BINDER ALSO OBTAINED FROM THE COAL FEEDSTOCK TO FORM GREEN AGGLOMERATES. THE BINDER CONTAINS A NONDISTILLABLE COAL EX-
TRACT FRACTION WHICH IS FLUID AT THE FORMING TEMPERATURE IN THE KILN. THE NONDISTILLABLE COAL EXTRACT FRACTION IS OBTAINED BY SOLVENT EXTRACTION OF THE COAL FEEDSTOCK.

SPENT ZINC CHLORIDE CATALYST IS REGENERATED BY COMBUSTION IN THE VAPOR PHASE IN THE PRESENCE OF A FLUIDIZED REFRACTORY SOLID SUCH AS SILICA SAND. USE OF A NEAR-STOICHIOMETRIC AMOUNT OF AIR RESULTS IN SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETE REMOVAL OF SULFUR, NITROGEN AND CARBON IMPURITIES, WHILE USE OF ABOUT 40 TO 60% OF THE STOICHIOMETRIC AMOUNT OF AIR RESULTS IN PRODUCTION OF A LOW-SULFUR FUEL GAS.

An improvement in the selective removal of SO2 from gases containing SO2 and O2 wherein a thiosulfate-rich aqueous solution containing a sulfite-forming additive is used as the selective SO2 absorbent, whereby a gas of substantially reduced SO2 content and a substantially unchanged O2 content is obtained.
