摘要: A support surface for general skin cooling, or reducing the incidence and promoting the healing of bedsores, includes: (a) at least one thermal layer comprising: a phase change material having a melting point of between about 18 and 32 degrees Centigrade; a gel or viscous fluid carrier in which the phase change material is substantially evenly distributed; and a fluid-impermeable, conformable envelope surrounding the phase change material and the carrier; (b) at least one conformable compression support layer beneath and adjacent to the thermal layer; (c) at least one conformable base support layer beneath and adjacent to the compression layer, the base support layer having a higher indentor load deflection (ILD) than the compression layer. A preferred embodiment, with or without the thermal layer, includes a heat tube layer. Another preferred embodiment includes an envelope containing phase change material in a carrier material, without either of the support layers.

摘要: An apparatus and method for evaluating perfusion adjacent a skin surface includes the steps of measuring a reference rate of perfusion of the skin surface, storing the reference rate of perfusion, and applying a positive force to the skin surface. The apparatus and method also includes the steps of measuring a second rate of perfusion adjacent the skin surface after the positive force is applied, and calculating a differential rate of perfusion between the reference rate of perfusion and the second rate of perfusion after positive force is applied to provide an indication of perfusion adjacent the skin surface. The apparatus and method further includes the step of displaying the indication of perfusion.

摘要: A support system that reduces the likelihood of breakdown of human skin, and hence formation of decubitus ulcers, is disclosed. The system comprises two sheets of flexible material bonded together to provide a plurality of separate cells that are capable of being alternately and repeatedly inflated and deflated by means of a fluid contained in the cells. The flexible material is impermeable to the fluid. The cells are of a size and shape and with an intercellular spacing such that in at least one of the width and length of the system, the distance between centers of adjacent inflated cells is less than the human two-point discrimination threshold and the support system is capable of supporting a human body with bottoming out either of or between the inflated cells. In particular embodiments, the support system is in the form of a mattress. The support system may be used with persons who are confined to bed, wheelchairs or the like for periods of time or who are otherwise fully or partially immobilized, including for therapeutic reasons.
