摘要: An optical medium associated with a first type of optical drive laser, such as a blue laser, embeds identification information readable by a second type of optical drive laser, such as a red laser associated with DVD media or an IR laser associated with CD media, in order to reduce the time used by the optical drive to recognize media. An attempt to read the embedded identification information by the second laser that succeeds provides the optical drive with the information to proceed with use of the optical medium using the first laser. An attempt to read the embedded identification information that fails provides the optical drive with the opportunity to detect whether the optical medium is associated with the second laser so that a single spindle kick of the optical medium by the optical drive determines whether the optical medium is associated with either of two types of lasers.

摘要: Separate sets of optical medium identification information are embedded in separate aligned layers of the optical medium to allow an optical drive to initiate use of the optical medium with information from both layers. For instance, a first set of identification information is embedded in the data layer of the optical medium and a second set of identification information is embedded on the protective surface layer of the optical medium. The first and second sets of information align so that a mixed signal is provided when the optical medium is initially inserted in the optical drive with the optical drive reading the separate sets of information while the read head is at a single location.

摘要: In use of an optical disk such as a Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) it is sometimes desirable to detect if a track jump occurs as quickly as possible after the occurrence. The optical disk format includes a pre-groove track structure which provides the frame work upon which data can be written to and read from the disk. The structure of the pre-groove track is utilized to detect the possible occurrence of an inadvertent track jump as soon as possible and in a time shorter than would be required to detect the track jump using only disk addressing data. The pre-groove track structure may be modified to enhance track jump detection, such as by positional codes in data line Segments of the track, or revolving coding schemes for the addressing data dibits.

摘要: System and method for configuring a removable storage medium. An embodiment of the invention may comprise selecting a configuration for the removable storage medium, wherein logical sectors are consistently identified for both an aware device and an unaware device. If the selected configuration is for the aware device, then a standard location for a file system indicator may be masked on the removable storage medium. If the selected configuration is for the unaware device, then the file system indicator may be copied from a non-standard location to the standard location on the removable storage medium.
