Abstract: Systems and methods for consolidated two-level beam management for a base station that includes BBU(s) and a RU communicatively coupled to the BBU(s) are provided. In one example, a method includes receiving signal measurements for coarse beams from a UE; establishing a coarse beam association for the UE with a first coarse beam based on the signal measurements for the coarse beams from the UE; configuring the UE to measure reference signals associated with fine beams associated with the first coarse beam; receiving reference signal measurements for the fine beams from the UE; establishing a fine beam association for the UE with a first fine beam based on the reference signal measurements for the fine beams from the UE; transmitting synchronization signals to the UE using the first coarse beam; and transmitting data signals to UE using the first fine beam.

At least part of the processing system is configured to perform operations comprising: estimating signal strength experienced by all or some of the mobile devices; identifying, based at least on the signal strength, one or more of the mobile devices that can be scheduled for communication with one or more of the remote units in the communication cell on a same airlink resource; and scheduling the communication.

Abstract: A system includes a plurality of remote units and a centralized unit communicatively coupled via a fronthaul network. The centralized unit implements a plurality of multicast groups. The centralized unit determines each of a plurality of sets of data to be sent across the fronthaul network to a respective corresponding subset of the plurality of remote units in the cell. The centralized unit also determines a mapping of each of the plurality of sets of data to a corresponding preferred subset of the plurality of remote units. For a set of data, the centralized unit also transmits the set of data to the corresponding subset of the plurality of remote units over the fronthaul network by multicasting the set of data to a multicast group of the plurality of multicast groups that best matches the corresponding preferred subset of the plurality of remote units mapped to the set of data.

Abstract: A C-RAN includes a plurality of remote units; a central unit communicatively coupled to the remote units via a fronthaul network; and an entity coupled to the fronthaul network configured to perform deep packet inspection. The central unit is configured to determine sets of data to be sent to respective subsets of remote units across the fronthaul network and determine a mapping of each of the sets of data to a respective one of the subsets of remote units. The central unit is also configured to add a respective indicator, based on the mapping, to packets for each set of data, wherein each respective indicator indicates each remote unit that the respective packet and set of data is intended for. The central unit is also configured to transmit the packets for the sets of data, each with the respective indicator, to the entity over the fronthaul network.
