Abstract: A method performed in a radio access network is disclosed. The method includes exchanging radio frequency (RF) signals between remote units (RUs) and mobile devices. At least some of the RF signals include information destined for, or originating from, a mobile device. The method also includes communicating compressed baseband data corresponding to the information from a controller to the RUs via an intermediate network.

Abstract: A communication system includes remote units, a UTC or GPS reference timing source, and a controller. The controller includes one or more modems and is connected to an external network, at least one of the modems being a baseband modem and being configured to pass first data corresponding to the information. The controller is separated from the remote units by an intermediate network over which second data corresponding to the information is transmitted in frames between the controller and the remote units. The second data includes baseband data. A controller clock is synchronized with the reference timing source and provides timing information to the controller. A remote unit clock is synchronized with the controller clock and provides timing information to a remote unit, the controller and the remote unit being configured to transmit time stamp messages to synchronize the controller clock and the remote unit clock.

Abstract: Among other things, a communication system comprising remote units, a reference timing source, a controller, a controller clock, and a remote unit clock. The remote units exchange radio frequency (RF) signals with mobile devices. The reference timing source is synchronized with a coordinated universal time (UTC) or a Global Positioning System (GPS). The controller clock is synchronized with the reference timing source and provides timing information to the controller. The remote unit clock is synchronized with the controller clock and provides timing information to a remote unit. The controller and the remote unit are configured to transmit time stamp messages to synchronize the controller clock and the remote unit clock, by avoiding contention between time stamp transmissions and baseband data transmissions or between time stamp transmissions of different remote units to the controller.

Abstract: A communication system comprising remote units and controllers or controller resources is described. The controllers or controller resources are configured to assign airlink resources to the user equipment, the airlink resources being for transmission or reception of at least some of the information passing between the remote units and the user equipment. The controllers or controller resources are configured to obtain information about data capacity demands in different areas of the site, and to configure one or more communication cells in the different areas of the site based on the information about data capacity demands in order to accommodate the data capacity demands, wherein the one or more communication cells are configured by changing assignments of a number of the remote units with a number of the controllers or controller resources.

At least some of the RF signals comprise information destined for, or originating from, a mobile device. The controller comprises one or more modems and is connected to an external network. At least one of the modems is a baseband modem and is configured to pass first data corresponding to the information. The controller is separated from the remote units by an intermediate network over which second data corresponding to the information is carried in frames between the controller and the remote units. The second data comprises baseband data and at least some of the baseband data is compressed in a frequency domain. The remote units and the controller are configured to compress the baseband data for transmission over the intermediate network.

Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a communication system comprising a remote unit comprising a remote unit local clock and a controller communicatively coupled to the remote unit using a switched Ethernet network. The remote unit is configured to synchronize the remote unit local clock to a reference timing source using timing messages communicated over the switched Ethernet network with the remote unit. The communication system is configured to transmit the timing messages and baseband data so as to reduce a level of contention encountered by the timing messages in connection with being communicated over the switched Ethernet network.

Abstract: Among other things, a communication system comprising at least one remote unit and controller is described. The at least one remote unit wirelessly exchanges radio frequency (RF) signals with mobile devices. Each RF signal comprises information destined for, or originating from, at least one of the mobile devices. The at least two remote units and the controller communicate baseband data corresponding to the information across an intermediate network. The at least two remote units each implement at least some physical layer processing for an air interface used to wirelessly communicate with the subscriber devices. The controller is configured to perform at least some receive signal processing using combined data resulting from combining at least some of the baseband data communicated from more than one of the at least two remote units.

The scheduler is for allocating resources for transmission of data representing the information, and is configured to override a pending hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) transmission on a HARQ process by scheduling a new HARQ transmission on the HARQ process.
