Abstract: A gas sensor element with suppressed response deterioration even when poisoned with S when fuel or exhaust gas contains ethanol and the ethanol content is high. The element includes a detection portion, which includes a solid electrolyte layer having a pair of electrodes on opposite sides thereof, a shielding layer defining a measurement target gas space with a porous diffusive resistance layer, and a reference gas space protective layer; a heat-generating portion stacked on the detection portion; and a porous protective layer surrounding the detection portion and heat-generating portion. The porous protective layer includes a first porous protective layer surrounding at least the porous diffusive resistance layer, and a second porous protective layer surrounding the first porous protective layer, the detection portion and the heat-generating portion. The first porous protective layer contains none of La, Ca, or Mg, while the second porous protective layer contains at least one of them.

Abstract: A gas sensor is provided which has a rapid heating property and which can detect A/F ratio with high accuracy and can detect specifically a stoichiometric environment with high accuracy. The gas sensor has a limiting current type gas sensor element. The gas sensor element has a cup-shaped solid electrolyte, a reference electrode formed on an inside surface of the solid electrolyte, a measuring electrode formed on an outside surface of the solid electrolyte and a heater. The heater is disposed inside the solid electrolyte so that a tip end thereof contacts the inside surface of the solid electrolyte. The gas sensor outputs the limiting current value depending on an oxygen concentration in exhaust gases by applying a predetermined voltage between the reference electrode and the measuring electrode. The measuring electrode, which a length thereof in a direction is 0.5 mm to 3.0 mm, is housed in a range 0.5 mm to 7.5 mm from a tip end of the solid electrolyte in the direction.

Abstract: A gas sensor is equipped with a sensor device made of a stack of a solid electrolyte body, a sensor electrode, a reference electrode, a first insulator, a second insulator, a gas chamber, a reference gas duct, a heater, and a heat transfer member. The heater has a heating element at least partially overlapping the sensor electrode and the reference electrode. The heat transfer member is made of a dense metallic oxide material which blocks passage of measurement gas therethrough. The heat transfer member is held between the sensor electrode and the first insulator in which the heater is embedded within the gas chamber and works to facilitate transfer of thermal energy, as generated by the heater, to the solid electrolyte body, the sensor electrode, and the reference electrode. This results in enhanced thermal conductivity of the sensor device and achieves quick activation of the sensor device.
