Abstract: The present invention relates to the formation of compound of the formula (I) by a ring closure reaction of the compound of the formula (II) in the presence of a catalytic amounts of a base. It has been found that this reaction is very efficient and offers for example an efficient pathway for the synthesis of 3,4-dehydro-α-tocotrienol respectively α-tocotrienol and α-tocopherol.
