    Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a process for the preparation of substantially pure sodium benzoate which comprises treating commercial grade methyl benzoate with acidic bleaching clay, of the montmorillonite type fractionally distilling the methyl benzoate to obtain a constant boiling-point, substantially pure fraction of methyl benzoate and saponifying the mixture with sodium hydroxide to obtain substantially pure sodium benzoate.
