A junction connector and a tap connector for a modular wiring system are disclosed. The junction connector has oppositely directed faces which receive cable connectors on the ends of the distribution cables of the system. Feed-through conductors in the junction connector are mated directly with terminals in the cable connectors. The tap connector is dimensioned to be mounted in a standard circular hole in a panel and has a mating face which is against a tap connector receiving face of the junction connector when the parts are mated. The terminals in the tap connector are arranged as a non-linear cluster in order that they might be all contained within the cylindrical tap connector housing. The feed-through conductors in the junction connector are in side-by-side coplanar relationship. The tap conductors which extend from the feed-through conductors to the tap terminals are rigid members, some of which have intermediate laterally extending portions to provide the transition to the cluster of terminals in the tap connector. These intermediate portions are received in recesses in the junction connector housing.

A T-shaped electrical junction connector having improved feed-through conductors and tap conductors therein is disclosed. The feed-through conductors comprise stamped rectangular plates each of which has three aligned openings extending therethrough. An elongated slot is formed in the feed--through conductors which intersects the openings. The metal of the conductor on each side of the slot is coined outwardly from the plane of the feed-through conductor to form a cylindrical surface which merges with one surface of the conductor. The tap conductors each comprise a cylindrical rod which is dimensioned to be inserted through one of the openings in the feed-through conductor and have an interference fit. The coined portions of the feed-through conductor are stressed in torsion when the tap conductor is inserted through the opening to enhance the contact force at the electrical interface. One or two of the tap conductors have laterally extending intermediate portions so that the free ends of the tap conductors will form a cluster so that the junction connector can be mated to a cylindrical tap connector.

An electrical connector comprises a connector plug part and a connector receptacle part, each part comprising a molded insert and a metal cylindrical shell within which the insert is fitted and retained. The insert of the receptacle part has passageways therethrough in which are secured electrical pin terminals and an integral hood which extends beyond the mating face of the receptacle insert and the shell of the receptacle part also has a hood which extends forwardly beyond the insert hood. The plug part comprises an insert in which passageways extend therethrough in which are secured electrical receptacle terminals and a shell which has an internal surface that is radially spaced from the external surface of the plug insert so that when the two parts are mated, the hood of the receptacle insert will be received between the external surface of the plug insert and the internal surface of the plug shell. The hood of the receptacle shell extends over the external surface of the plug shell when the parts are mated and threads or the like on the external surface of the receptacle shell hood are engaged by threads provided on the internal surface of a metal coupling ring which is rotationally mounted on the plug shell. A pin member extends across the threads and engages a groove in the threads of the receptacle shell hood and the coupling ring to provide an audible and tactile indication of a fully-mated condition of the plug and receptacle parts.

Multi-contact electrical connector comprises an insulating housing having contact terminals therein. The housing has oppositely facing endwalls on each of which there is provided a latching means for latching the connector to a complementary connecting device. Each latching means comprises a latch arm which extends forwardly beyond the mating end of the connector and a latching ear which cooperates with a latch arm on the complementary connecting device. The latch arms on the two endwalls are located on one side of a medial reference plane and the latch ears on the other side of the reference plane. The reference plane extends normally on the endwalls of the housing and parallel to the sidewalls. When the connector is coupled to an identical connector or other complementary connecting device, each terminal in the connector is coupled with a terminal in the complementary connecting device which occupies the same position in the complementary device as the terminal in the connector. The complementary device may be identical to the connector.
