摘要:
An optical fiber (F) and a laser (L) are fixed on the top faces of two bases (EF, EL) which also have two facing vertical faces. A spring (4) presses these two faces against each other so as to create thrust friction. The thrust force is initially moderate in order to enable the relative vertical and transverse positions (GV, GT) of the two bases to be adjusted smoothly, after which the force is increased progressively in order to prevent relative displacement taking place while the two bases are being welded together by means of a YAG laser. The invention is particularly applicable to making optical transmission heads usable in optical fiber telecommuncations systems.

An opto-electronic component such as a semiconductor optical amplifier (L) is mounted on a copper base (EL) which is received in a receptacle constituted by two blocks (DA, DB) of ferrous alloy. Two other blocks (BA, BB) carry fibers to be coupled (FA, FB) and they are fixed to said receptacle by weld spots (PA, QA, PB, QB) on the edges of the faces of said blocks that are bearing against one another. The invention is particularly suitable for optical fiber telecommunications networks.

In a method of coupling an optical fiber to an optical component on the same substrate, eccentricity of the core of a coupling fiber is exploited to adjust the vertical position of the core by rotation of the fiber about its axis. This adjustment is carried out with the fiber held in contact with a horizontal reference surface of a substrate also carrying a laser diode constituting the component to which the fiber must be coupled. The method can be used to implement transmission headers for optical fiber telecommunication systems.

The side surface of a ferrule (16) carrying a polarization-maintaining option fiber (10) has a projecting substantially dihedral-angled portion (17, 19) engaged in a complementary re-entrant substantially dihedral angled portion (22, 24) formed in a ferrule receiver (20). The invention is particularly applicable to making a laser-emitting head for an optical fiber telecommunications network.

A DFB laser (2) is coupled to a monomode line fiber (14) via an isolator constituted by a Faraday rotator crystal (4) and a polarizing fiber (10) which is welded to a fiber to be coupled (14). A focusing lens (8) is integrated in an intermediate block including the rotator crystal (4) and a permanent magnet (6). The invention is particularly suitable for making light-emitting heads for use in optical fiber telecommunications systems.

In an optoelectronic module (1) comprising a plastics material package (2) accommodating a base (8) fixed to the package (2) and supporting an optical component (9) coupled by an optical fiber (5) to an optical connector (4) of the package (2), fiber displacements associated with thermal stresses are avoided by mounting the base so that it floats on the package (2) and possibly the connector (4). The floating mounting of the base (8) is obtained by using for fixing the base one or more adhesives (13, 14) having a greater elasticity than the adhesives used to fix each of the two ends (6, 7) of the fiber (5) to the base (8) and the connector (4), respectively.

A four-port optical circulator has two planar lightwave circuit polarisation beam splitters (40, 54). Two ports of the circulator are formed by two input ports (32, 36) of the first splitter (40). The two other ports of the circulator are formed by two input ports (34, 38) of the second splitter (56). The circulator further has an assembly of a wave plate (46) and a Faraday rotator (48). A first light path through this assembly connects a first output port (42) of the first splitter (40) and a first output port (50) of the second splitter (54). A second light path through the assembly connects a second output port (44) of the first splitter (40) and a second output port (52) of the second splitter (54). The circulator is easy to integrate into a planar lightwave circuit. It may also be used as isolator.

The present invention relates to a method of limiting coupling losses between a monomode optical fiber (2) having a mode diameter of W.sub.o, and an optical system (1) having a mode diameter W'.sub.o that is different from W.sub.o, said method being characterized by the fact that a piece (4) of multimode fiber is welded onto the end of said monomode fiber, said piece of multimode fiber having a length in the range 0.1 mm to 5 mm, and having the same cladding outside diameter as said monomode fiber, a mode diameter substantially equal to W'.sub.o, and an index difference .delta.n lying in the range 5.times.10.sup.-3 to 50.times.10.sup.-3, the weld creating an adiabatic cone in the region where the cores meet.

A hybrid optical device includes a passive component coupled optically to an active component, the passive component being formed in layers of silica on a substrate made of silica, the layers and the substrate thus forming a silica-on-silica structure. The hybrid optical device includes an intermediate element having good thermal conductivity and a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of the active component, wherein the active component is fixed to the intermediate element prior to insertion into the cavity, and the intermediate element is fixed to the structure so that the active component is located inside the cavity and is coupled optically to the passive component.

A process of aligning electro-optical devices that associate a semiconductor, laser diode or electroluminescent component with an optical component, such as an optical fiber. These devices must be aligned with a precision of from .+-.1 to .+-.10.mu.. The semiconductor component is integral with a centering part through the intermediary of a first bracket. The optical component, through the intermediary of a second bracket, is integral with a container in which is placed a hardening material. The centering part is plunged in the hardening material, with three degrees of mobility. The alignment is dynamic. When adjustment has been made, the hardening material is rapidly and rigidly fixed.
