摘要:
An air or gas bubble detection system detects the presence of liquid in intravenous (IV) tubing. By detecting the presence of liquid rather than gas, false alarms due to micro bubbles or small air gaps between the sensor and the tubing are avoided.

An intravenous flow control system provides closed loop control to maintain a desired flow rate. The actual flow rate is determined by two techniques, a geometrically based technique that uses geometric parameters of the IV system, and a thermally based technique that uses the power input to an IV fluid warmer and the temperature of the IV fluid entering and exiting the warmer.

A testing apparatus measures cooling power of an electrically-powered Microclimate Cooling Unit (MCU) at the point of use of the MCU. The tester includes fluid supply and return ports for fluidly connecting to the MCU. A fluid heater provides a heat load to fluid in the tester. Fluid temperatures upstream and downstream of the heater are measured. The fluid flow rate is adjustable and measurable. A digital processor extracts the temperature and fluid flow rate data and computes cooling watts. The computed cooling watts are compared to the manufacturer's specifications to determine if the MCU is operating properly.

A medical pump that provides advance guidance to a user regarding existence and limits of a valid input range for a pump programming parameter includes an input device for entering a value of a pump programming parameter, a memory for storing constraints related to the pump programming parameter, and a processor in communication with the memory and the input device. The processor dynamically utilizes the constraints to determine and generate a signal indicating whether a valid input range exists for a to-be-entered value of the pump programming parameter and notifies the user.

Devices, systems and methods for controlling fluid temperatures from more than one fluid containers prior to their infusion into a human body are disclosed. The device includes a power supply source for providing power; an input/output interface for receiving fluid temperature data from thermal sensors and for transmitting duty-cycle signals to each of the fluid warming unit; a processing unit for comparing fluid temperature data with a permissible fluid temperature range, for calculating a fluid temperature differential, and for apportioning the available work cycle of the power supply source; and a controller for adjusting the duty-cycle of each fluid warming unit based on the fluid temperature differentials, so that during each work cycle all available power provided by the power supply source is delivered to only one of the fluid warming units at a time.

An active gas removal system is provided to remove air or gas bubbles from an intravenous fluid prior to infusion into the patient. The system detects the level of liquid in a drip chamber and occludes a downstream valve to the patient, thereby increasing pressure in the drip chamber sufficient to open a vent valve and release gas therein.

A lithium polymer (LiPo) battery pack having LiPo battery cells is provided which includes battery protection circuitry, charging circuitry, cell balancing circuitry, and control and communication circuitry. The batteries can be charged while in use by an internal charger. Battery charging and discharging are accomplished in a controlled and protected manner to avoid overcharging and overdischarging conditions. The novel battery pack has built-in safeguards against dangerous LiPo battery conditions and is implemented in a small, portable unit which contains the battery cells, control and protection circuitry, internal charger and display gauge. The battery pack is useful for powering an intravenous fluid warmer or other medical or electrical devices and equipment.

A fluid warming device includes axially or longitudinally slidable covers that retain a removable heat exchange body in a housing in heat exchange communication with a heater assembly while allowing flow through the heat exchange body to be observed. In another aspect, a fluid warming system increases or decreases power to a heater assembly to adjust the fluid temperature to ensure that the fluid is at an appropriate temperature when it reaches the patient.

An intravenous fluid heater is provided that is dimensioned so as to be wearable adjacent a patient's intravenous fluid infusion situs. In one embodiment, the heater includes a heat exchanger for defining a flow path through the heater for fluid to be infused via the infusion situs. At least one controllable heating element is provided for heating the fluid in the flow path by heat conduction thereto through the heat exchanger. Sensors are included for sensing respective temperatures of entering and exiting fluids of the flow path. A controller controls, based upon the temperatures of the exiting fluids, heating of the fluid in the flow path by the heating element so as to cause the fluid in the flow path to be substantially uniformly heated to a desired infusion temperature prior to exiting the heater.
