    摘要: A surgical instrument for attachment to a cutting block having a cutting slot defining a cutting plane is described. The surgical instrument comprises a dual purpose indicator (2) member. The indicator member is configured to (i) allow visualization of a first plane and (ii) to indicate a predetermined distance from a second plane perpendicular to the first plane. The surgical instrument also comprises an attachment member (14,16,18,20) for attaching the surgical instrument to the cutting slot in either of two mutually perpendicular orientations such that either the first plane or the second plane is parallel to the cutting plane. The surgical instrument can therefore be used both to visualize a plane of a cut and to indicate a distance from the plane of a cut, depending on the orientation of the attachment member in the cutting slot. This allows inventory to be reduced because the surgical instrument can replace two prior art instruments. The surgical instrument may form part of a system with one or more cutting blocks.

    摘要: A surgical cutting guide (8) is described which comprises a body section delimiting a recess (14) extending into the body section from an external surface. The recess has a central axis and is for receiving an attachment protrusion (18) from a surgical alignment guide (6). The recess comprises: a first portion (36) having a first constant cross section along the central axis; and a second portion (38) having a second constant cross section along the central axis which is larger than the first constant cross section. The first and second portions are coaxial with the central axis and the second portion is closer to the external surface than the first portion. This configuration creates a stepped surface in the recess which is engaged by corresponding features on a protrusion of a surgical alignment guide. The attachment protrusion (18) of the alignment guide (6) has a central axis and comprises: a first portion (20) having a first constant cross section along the central axis; and a second portion (22) having a second constant cross section along the central axis that is larger than the first constant cross section. The first portion is further away than the second portion, and the first and second portions are coaxial with the central axis. The surgical cutting guide and surgical alignment guide form a system in which the alignment guide can be removed more easily from the cutting guide because there is more freedom of movement once the stepped surfaces are disengaged.

    摘要: An angular adjustment mechanism for a surgical instrument is described. The mechanism comprises an adjustment member (102) configured for rotation about a longitudinal axis (122), the adjustment member comprising a plurality of pairs of facets (134) arranged about the longitudinal axis. Each of the plurality of pairs of facets defines a respective angled axis (148B,148C) at an angle (150B,150C) relative to the longitudinal axis. A pivoting member (104) is arranged to pivot about a pivot axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and comprises a recess (128) for receiving the adjustment member and engaging one pair of the plurality of pairs of facets. This provides an angular adjustment mechanism in which facets on the outside of the adjustment member engage corresponding surfaces in a recess on a pivoting member. The use of facets provides a secure connection while allowing a greater degree of angular adjustment and providing a further benefit of simple operation.
