The yarn brake (1) according to the invention comprises individually adjustable biasing means (21, 22) which cooperate with plates (8, 9). By adjusting both biasing means (21, 22), desired positions of the brake plates (8, 9) may be deliberately set in a manner other than in conventional yarn brakes. For example, a desired centered position may be preserved for any yarn tension. It is also feasible to shift the desired centered position on purpose by deliberately adjusting both biasing means. The setting of the yarn tension is thus independent from the setting of the centered position.

The yarn feed wheel, because of the choice of its material or its shaping, has improved long-term operation properties. The geometry and/or the material has low susceptibility to wear. This is attained by means of ceramic surfaces and/or the combination of a conical, continuous yarn inlet surface with adjoining striplike bearing faces in the yarn storage region and a continuous, that is, uninterrupted surface in the yarn payout region; the surfaces are shaped such that the yarn, along its way from the inlet region into the payout region, sweeps over the corresponding surfaces over the entire axial course. The striplike supporting or bearing of the yarn in the yarn storage region is attained by suitable shaping of the yarn feed wheel in the yarn storage region. Openings or slits or the like in the yarn feed wheel are not necessary but may be provided.

A yarn supply apparatus is equipped with a clutch arrangement in order to couple a drive wheel to rotate with a yarn supply wheel as necessary. The clutch arrangement is constructed in an open design, in which any development of narrowing spaces is avoided. For this purpose one clutch half is provided with axial fingers, which engage in radially open longitudinal slots, formed by a toothing, of the other clutch half. The slots of the toothing are longer than the engagement length between fingers and toothing. The intermediate space formed between the ends of the fingers and the nearest wall in axial direction is open in radial direction or is in communication with a larger inner space. Thereby the compression or compaction of deposited fluff is prevented.
