The first wheel assembly and the second wheel assembly press against the cable and push the cable into the pipe. The cable guide system positions both the cable and the pipe onto the frame and between the first wheel assembly and the second wheel assembly. The first wheel assembly and the second wheel assembly are aligned with each other such that as the second wheel assembly is rotated by a user, the first wheel assembly applies press onto the cable, opposite the second wheel assembly, and consequently pushes the cable into the pipe.

A drive and tension control apparatus at least one of increments, maintains or decrements the speed of a driven take-off roll when the tension is out of a predetermined range of operation. A tension controller devices measures tension and determines whether the average tension for the moving threads is out-of-range relative to the predetermined tension values for the threads. Alarms and other indicators may also be used to determine the threads are at least one of broken, not moving and out-of-range for tension control.

Wire is fed along a predetermined path by virtue of being pinched between an upper set of feed rolls and a lower set of feed rolls while the upper and lower rolls are rotated in opposite directions. The upper feed rolls are journaled cantilever fashion by an upper carrier which is fixed to the main frame of the apparatus. The lower feed rolls are similarly journaled by a lower carrier which is adapted to be moved upwardly toward the upper carrier to cause the lower feed rolls to pinch the wire against upper feed rolls after the wire has been threaded between the rolls. The lower carrier is moved upwardly by actuators which are offset laterally from the cantilevered rolls. To reduce cocking of the lower carrier and the lower feed rolls when the latter are forced upwardly into engagement with the wire by the offset actuators, the lower carrier is attached to a guide rod whose end portions are slidably supported by both the upper carrier and the main frame in order to spread the reaction force over a relatively long distance.

The planetary rollers define circumferential peripheral feed surfaces spaced from each other about the feed axis and are configured for simultaneous engagements with a wire along preselected lines of contact. Each of the feed surfaces is intersected at right angles by a plane which is offset from the feed axis by an offset angle. Each of the roller is pivotable about an axis normal to the feed axis so as to adjust the offset angle between the roller and the feed axis, thereby selecting a roller feed surface profile parallel to the feed axis which corresponds to the external configuration of a wire selected from a range of wires having different diameter sizes. The arrangement provides a line of maximum contact between the roller surface and the selected wire. The pair of rollers are simultaneously urging radially towards the feed axis so as to apply a normal force to the wire along the lines of contact between the roller feed surfaces and the wire. When the body and rollers are rotated about the feed axis, the rollers are apply to the wire a generally tangential force along the lines of contact, thereby feeding the wire along the feed axis.

The puller system then feeds the wire (11) through a tip (15) to the welding operation represented by an arc (16) and a work piece (17). The pusher system (12) has a motor (20) adjusted so as to feed the wire (11) at the desired rate. A pair of rollers (22), which are driven by the motor (20), are designed to slip on the wire (11) if the wire becomes jammed or blocked. The puller system (14) has a limited torque motor (30). The limited torque motor (30) drives a pair of rollers (32) which firmly grip the wire (11) and do not slip on the wire (11). If the wire (11) becomes blocked or jammed then the motor (30) will stall. The combination of the pusher system (12) and the puller system (14) provides a wire feeder which does not damage the wire (11) and which does not cause birdnesting if the wire is jammed or blocked.

At the top of the piston stroke, the stationary clamp (5) closes, the movable clamp (3) opens, and the piston (2) falls to enable the movable clamp (3) to grip the cable (6) again at a lower position.
