    摘要: An optical communications system for conveying traffic through an optical link between transmitting and receiving nodes. The system comprises, for each node, respective legacy and bypass paths coupled in parallel between the optical link and the node. The legacy path of each node includes an optical dispersion compensation block for compensating a respective portion of dispersion of the link. Thus the present invention provides a system architecture by which an optical communications system can be constructed using conventional modulation and optical dispersion compensation technologies. Once installed, system growth can be accommodated using next generation transmitters (with electronic compensation) without stranding the legacy equipment. Legacy channels can also be upgraded to electronic compensation, as desired.

    摘要: An optical communications system is adapted for connection to an optical fiber link of an optical communications network. The system obtains a fiber identifier respecting the optical fiber link; a respective optimum setting of one or more parameters of the optical communications system; and adjusts a respective value of each parameter in accordance with the respective optimum setting. The fiber identifier can be obtained from a value of at least one fiber transmission property of the optical fiber link. The fiber transmission property value is used to search a look-up table of class definitions, each class definition including a respective class identifier and at least one corresponding characteristic transmission property value. A class identifier is selected as the fiber identifier from the class definition for which each characteristic transmission property value most closely matches a corresponding fiber transmission property value. Each class definition may also include an optimum setting for each parameter.

    摘要: A system configured to perform a method for estimating external noise in a communication channel between a transmitter and a receiver is described. The method comprises obtaining a measurement of effective noise on decoded symbols at the receiver, the decoded symbols comprising noisy versions of symbols conveyed by a communication signal transmitted over the communication channel. The method further comprises storing a representation of a relationship between the effective noise, external noise in the communication channel, and one or more variable parameters. The method further comprises storing applicable values of the variable parameters, wherein each applicable value is associated with current properties of the transmitter or current properties of the receiver or both. The method further comprises calculating an estimate of the external noise in the communication channel using the effective noise, the applicable values of the variable parameters, and the representation of the relationship.
