Abstract: A controller for operating a multilevel electric power inverter circuit. The controller is configured to generate and apply to the plurality of switching elements switch signal waveforms, the switch signal waveforms comprising a first control signal for causing an energy storage device to be series connected with a direct current source and a load or an alternating current source and charged to a predetermined value proportional to a voltage of the direct current source, and a second control signal for causing the energy storage device to be disconnected from the direct current source and series connected with the load or the alternating current source, thereby causing the energy storage device to be discharged.

Abstract: A power converter for transforming electrical power between direct current power and alternating current power is provided, as well as related methods and systems. The power converter comprises: a half-bridge inverter, a switching cell, and a connection branch connecting the half-bridge inverter to the switching cell. The half-bridge inverter comprises: first and second switches connected in parallel, and a first capacitor connected between the first and second switches. The switching cell comprises: a first pair of switches forming a first branch, a second pair of switches and a second capacitor forming a second branch; and a third capacitor connected between the first and second branches. The connection branch is coupled to the half-bridge inverter at a first point intermediate the first capacitor and the second switch, and coupled to the switching cell at a second point intermediate the first branch and the second capacitor.

Abstract: Generalized circuit topology of voltage level multiplier modules (VLMMs) for use with multilevel inverters (MLIs) and power converter circuits comprising at least one VLMM and a MLI are described herein. The VLMM is configured to receive a first output voltage from the MLI having a first number of voltage levels and to generate a second output voltage having a second number of voltage levels. If the first number of voltage levels is M, and the VLMM is N-fold voltage level multiplier, then second number of voltage levels is M×N+1. Switching pattern generators for use with the VLMM and modulation methods for controlling switching elements of the VLMM are also described herein.
