    摘要: Magnetic tape systems, magnetic tape and reel systems, magnetic tape drives and methods of manufacturing the systems and drives comprise, for the magnetic tape system, two lengths of magnetic tape of substantially equal width dimension; and a cleaning tape positioned between and joining the two lengths of magnetic tape, forming a combined multi-part tape having the cleaning tape contained between the two lengths of magnetic tape. In the tape drive, the tape, two reels, each reel supporting at least a distal end of the combined multi-part tape, and a magnetic tape head assembly are contained in a common enclosure, such that the magnetic tape drive is self-contained. Manufacturability is enhanced by having a very long combined multi-part tape made from two lengths of magnetic tape joined together by a cleaning tape.

    摘要: A magnetic tape drive has a drive system to move a magnetic tape longitudinally; servo head(s) for reading servo band information from a magnetic tape as the magnetic tape is moved longitudinally; a magnetic tape read write head configured to read and to write the magnetic tape, having a data write width (w) greater than a normal shingled track pitch width (p) of the magnetic tape; an actuator system for positioning the read write head laterally; and a control. The magnetic tape drive stores an overwrite erase format of non-shingled track pitch longitudinal pattern(s) whose pitch is greater than the normal shingled track pitch width (p); and, the control, in response to activation of overwrite erasure of the tape drive, operates the actuator system and the magnetic tape read write head to write non-data to magnetic tape in the stored overwrite erase format.

    摘要: A method and system for servo stripe width detection and compensation including moving a magnetic tape in a first direction across a magnetic tape head, the magnetic tape having a servo band including a first servo pattern and a second servo pattern, the magnetic tape head having a servo element; detecting a leading edge and a trailing edge of the first servo pattern with the servo element; detecting a leading edge and a trailing edge of the second servo pattern with the servo element; determining a first time from the leading edge of the first servo pattern to the leading edge of the second servo pattern; determining a second time from the trailing edge of the first servo pattern to the trailing edge of the second servo pattern; and determining a correction value from a difference between the first time and the second time.
