摘要: A computer program product, system, and method are provided for direct resistance measurement of a magnetoresistive (MR) head of a storage drive in a storage system. In one embodiment, a voltage difference across the MR reader head is measured directly by applying an AC current to the MR head to generate an AC voltage across the MR head that can propagate through filter capacitors and be measured. In one embodiment, the voltage difference is amplified and the peak-to-peak voltage at the output of the amplifier is captured. Similarly, a reference voltage difference across a reference resistance is measured directly by applying a reference AC current to a reference resistance. The resistance of an MR reader head may be calculated directly as a function of the respective voltage differences without including the resistance of any bias resistors biasing the MR head.

摘要: Systems and methods are disclosed for dynamically adjusting parameters used during a read operation to reduce stress on a read head. In certain embodiments, an apparatus may comprise a read head configured to read data stored to a data storage medium, and a control circuit that controls a parameter of the read head influencing the read head's ability to accurately read data. The control circuit may be configured to extend the working lifespan of the read head by monitoring a read performance of the read head, and adjusting the parameter to reduce the read performance when the read performance is greater than a first threshold.

摘要: A disk drive dynamic wave shaper (DWS) write driver includes a write current generator that produces a baseline output current for the write current pulses and an overshoot current generator that produces an overshoot current with different values. The overshoot current is added to the baseline current, with the value of the overshoot current amplitude (OSA) being selected in response to the frequency of transitions in the write data signal. The write driver includes logic circuitry that detects the pattern of transitions. Transitions that are immediately followed by a transition will receive a larger-than-nominal OSA1, transitions that are not immediately followed by a transition and that are not preceded by a long sequence of non-transitions will receive a nominal OSA2, and transitions after longer sequences of non-transitions will receive a smaller-than-nominal OSA3.

摘要: Magnetoresistive (MR) bias is dynamically controlled in a tape drive using a processor device. Median tape head amplitude is monitored during a calibration operation, as measured across all tracks of the tape head, against predetermined thresholds of the tape drive for determining if the median tape head amplitude is below the threshold value. Upon determining the median tape head amplitude is below the threshold value during the calibration operation, a reference MR bias and a MR bias range is dynamically adjusted, during the calibration operation, for increasing the median tape head amplitude.

摘要: A bias calibration circuit includes a first current source that can provide a majority biasing current, sufficient to provide most but not all of a desired bias voltage across a sensor. A second current source can provide a remaining amount of biasing current (minority biasing current) to provide a bias voltage across the sensor. In some embodiments, the current sources are programmable and codes are determined for programming the first and second current sources. The codes can be stored in a memory.

The method includes positioning a transducer with respect to a recording medium, where the transducer includes a writer, a reader, a heater, and a thermally responsive sensor. The method further includes applying power to the heater to establish a fly height of the transducer; supplying a bias current through the thermally responsive sensor to generate a bias signal; measuring a root mean square (RMS) voltage VRMS of the thermally responsive sensor based on the bias signal; determining a threshold voltage VT; and detecting a contact event between the transducer and the medium based on VRMS being greater than VT.

摘要: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk surface comprising a radius, a head operable to generate a read signal, and a voice coil motor (VCM) operable to actuate the head over the disk surface. A back electromotive force (BEMF) voltage generated by the VCM is measured. The VCM is controlled to move the head over substantially the entire radius of the disk surface in response to the BEMF voltage, and while moving the head the read signal from the head is processed to detect residual data recorded on the disk surface after erasing the disk surface.
