A method and apparatus for monitoring changes in the intra-thoracic pressure of a patient due to the patient's respiratory activity or volumetric changes in the extra-thoracic arterial circulatory system due to cardiac function based on the changes in pressure in the patient's extra-thoracic arterial circulatory system as measured by a plethysmography sensor, such as an photoplethysmograph. A frequency spectrum is generated for the plethysmograph signal and the frequencies of interest is isolated from the frequency spectrum by setting appropriate cutoff frequencies for the frequency spectrum. This isolated frequency is used to filter the plethysmograph signal to provide a signal indicative of the patient's respiratory activity or cardiac function.

Medical devices and techniques derive breath rate, breath distention, and pulse distention measurements of a subject from a pulse oximeter system coupled to a subject. These parameters, together with the conventional physiologic parameters obtained from a pulse oximeter system, can be used to assist in controlling the ventilation levels and the anesthesia levels of the subject. The development has human applications and particular applications for animal research.

A one-piece conveyor flange adapter designed for hollow bore, direct drive configurations. A dual flange casting has two opposite flanges machined and bored to attach between a mounting plate on an electric motor speed reducer housing and a similar mounting plate on a conveyor drive frame. The adapter has a large central axial opening between the two parallel plates, through which a rotating drive shaft extends. The adapter is bolted in place between the speed reducer housing and the conveyor drive frame. The flange adapter has a base mounted on the speed reducer. The outer cruciform flange mounts directly on the conveyor frame with two or four bolt connections. The conveyor drive shaft fits through the opening and connects to gears inside the reducer. Alternatively, the reducer has an output shaft that extends through the opening and directly connects to the conveyor drive.
