Abstract: According to one embodiment, a medical image processing apparatus includes first specifier, second specifier, determiner and display controller. First specifier collates an ischemic region calculated from a blood vessel visualized into a three-dimensional image in a plurality of phases with a dominating region of the blood vessel, and specifies a culprit vessel in the ischemic region. Second specifier specifies a culprit stenosis in the culprit vessel based on a pressure index calculated from the blood vessel. Determiner determines a connection position to connect a bypass vessel that makes a detour around the culprit stenosis. Display controller displays the determined connection position on a display.

Abstract: A method of evaluating a vessel of a patient is provided. The method includes outputting, to a display device, a screen display including: a visualization based on pressure measurements obtained from a first instrument and a second instrument positioned within the vessel of the patient while the second instrument is moved longitudinally through the vessel and the first instrument remains stationary within the vessel; and a visual representation of a vessel; receiving a user input to modify the visualization to simulate a therapeutic procedure; and updating the screen display, in response to the user input, including modifying the visualization based on the user input. A system for evaluating a vessel of a patient is also provided. The system includes first and second instruments sized and shaped for introduction into the vessel of the patient; and a processing system communicatively coupled to the first and second instruments and a display device.

Abstract: Embodiments provide a reliable, convenient, noninvasive, and cost-effective determination of structural and valvular abnormalities in the left ventricular outflow tract. Embodiments obtain a noninvasive optical pulse plethysmogram from the systolic and diastolic phases of the cardiac cycle for subsequent morphologic waveform analysis to determine left ventricular outflow tract anomalies. Left ventricular outflow tract abnormalities alter the rate of increase in flow during early systole and decrease in flow during late systole. These flow variances at the aortic valve are amplified as the pulse wave moves to the periphery due to a combination of the ventricular-aortic interaction, pulse augmentation, and reflections at branching vessels and changes in diameter. The invention addresses historical limitations in the noninvasive determination of structural and valvular abnormalities in the left ventricular outflow tract by using one or more of (1) improved optical measurement systems, (2) peripheral sampling locations that maximize signal differences, (3) volitional patient maneuvers to improve the diagnostic ability of the system, and (4) pulse enhancement techniques. The resulting test system can be used to determine the presence of abnormalities and to diagnose the type of abnormality. The ability to more efficiently and effectively diagnose aortic stenosis, the most common abnormality, in the primary care clinic will result in fewer patients experiencing complications such as heart failure, heart attack, and sudden death.

Abstract: The invention generally relates to medical imaging systems that instantly and/or automatically detect borders. Embodiments of the invention provide an imaging system that automatically detects a border at a location within a vessel in response only to navigational input moving the image to that location. In some embodiments, systems and methods of the invention operate such that when a doctor moves an imaging catheter to a new location with in tissue, the system essentially instantly finds, and optionally displays, the border(s), calculates an occlusion, or both.

Abstract: A Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) guidewire and method of use includes at least two pairs of small surface area, closely spaced electrodes spaced axially along the length of the guidewire to allow one electrode pair to be positioned on each side of a coronary stenosis. The electrodes can sense electrical signals from the myocardium immediately adjacent to the electrodes, enabling the guidewire to record and analyze an Intra-Coronary Electrogram (ICEG) and heart pacing, and, therefore, facilitate more accurately diagnosis of an individual patient's stenosis and provide a more patient specific diagnosis of clinical need.
