Abstract: An electric machine includes a unitary, single material substrate defining a rotor lamination including a first region having a predefined magnetic permeability. The rotor lamination includes an arc-shaped second region having a magnetic permeability less than the first region. The second region is oriented such that it impedes flux associated with magnets contained by the first region and perpendicular to quadrature flux field lines associated with the magnets.

Each section is comprised of axially stacked laminations that define a pattern of axial grooves on an outer surface of the rotor to reduce torque ripple. The pattern is different for at least two of the sections. The pattern for each section may alternate with respect to poles of the rotor.

Abstract: A hybrid powertrain utilizes a motor with a permanent magnet rotor. The rotor is formed by inserting parallelepiped magnets into slots. To reduce the likelihood of demagnetization, the net magnetization of each magnet is oriented parallel to a sidewards surface of the magnet and not perpendicular to an outwards surface of the magnet. The magnets may be arranged in multiple rows. The magnets in each row may be perpendicular to a rotor radial or diagonal to a rotor diagonal.
