    Abstract: Provided are a liquid crystal diffraction element, an image display apparatus, and a head mounted display where occurrence of a ghost in a head mounted display such as VR glasses can be suppressed. The liquid crystal diffraction element includes at least an optically-anisotropic layer that is formed of a liquid crystal composition including a liquid crystal compound, in which the optically-anisotropic layer has a liquid crystal alignment pattern in which an orientation of an optical axis derived from the liquid crystal compound changes while continuously rotating in at least one in-plane direction, in a case where a length over which the optical axis rotates by 180 degrees in the one direction is set as a single period, the single period gradually changes in the one direction, and in a case where an average period of 50 periods in the one direction from a period having a longest length of the single period is represented by Λa and a main surface of the optically-anisotropic layer in a region having a period shorter than or equal to the average period Λa is observed with an optical microscope, both of a ratio between a maximum value and a minimum value among widths of 30 continuous bright lines and a ratio between a maximum value and a minimum value among widths of 30 continuous dark lines in the region are 1.2 or less.

    Abstract: Provided is a diffraction element having excellent aligning properties of a liquid crystal compound. The diffraction element includes an optically-anisotropic layer that has a liquid crystal alignment pattern in which an orientation of an optical axis derived from a liquid crystal compound changes while continuously rotating in at least one in-plane direction, in which a birefringence Δn of the optically-anisotropic layer is 0.20 or more, the optically-anisotropic layer includes a surfactant, and in a case where components in a depth direction are analyzed by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry from one surface to another surface of the optically-anisotropic layer, a depth-direction profile of a secondary ion intensity derived from the surfactant is obtained, a position corresponding to a thickness of 20% from the one surface of the optically-anisotropic layer is represented by a position D20, a position corresponding to a thickness of 80% from the one surface is represented by a position D80, and an average value of secondary ion intensities derived from the surfactant between the position D20 and the position D80 is calculated, in a region from the position D20 to the position D80, a peak having a size of 1.1 times or more the average value is observed and a peak having a size of 5 times or more the average value is not observed.

    Abstract: According to the present invention, provided are an optical laminate which has excellent adhesiveness between two optically anisotropic layers, and in which an A plate or a layer obtained by fixing a twist-aligned liquid crystal phase, which is as an optically anisotropic layer, has excellent liquid crystal alignment properties, a polarizing plate, and an image display device. An optical laminate of the present invention has: a first optically anisotropic layer formed of a first liquid crystal compound; a second optically anisotropic layer formed of a second liquid crystal compound; and a mixed layer which is disposed between the first optically anisotropic layer and the second optically anisotropic layer and contains a component derived from the first liquid crystal compound and a component derived from the second liquid crystal compound, the first optically anisotropic layer is a C plate, the second optically anisotropic layer is an A plate or a layer obtained by fixing a twist-aligned liquid crystal phase, the mixed layer further contains a photo-alignment compound, and in an analysis of components of the optical laminate in a depth direction by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry with ion beam irradiation from a surface of the optical laminate on a first optically anisotropic layer side toward a second optically anisotropic layer side, predetermined requirements are satisfied.
