摘要:
A method and a system based on the method imparts to an optical fiber a predetermined rotation about its axis, wherein the fiber is rotated by way of a frictional force acting on the fiber while it is advanced in a predetermined direction. The rotation actually imparted to the optical fiber is measured on-line while the fiber is advancing in the direction and the frictional force is controlled responsively to the measured rotation so as to obtain the predetermined rotation. Spinning devices acting on the optical fiber by way of an externally controllable frictional force and particularly suitable to be used with the method are disclosed.

Apparatus for applying traction to an elongate cylindrical element produced by fusion of an end portion of a preform of glass material, in which a traction device is capable of being connected to a portion of the elongate cylindrical element to provide traction of the elongate cylindrical element along an axis. A device for the rotation of the elongate cylindrical element applies a twist to the elongate cylindrical element about the axis simultaneously with the traction.

An optical cable for telecommunications having an optical core and a plurality of protecting and reinforcing elements or avers placed around the optical core. The optical core has a central reinforcing element, a polymer layer, a plurality of optical fibers incorporated in the polymer layer and a thin sheath which covers the polymer layer. The optical fibers have an alternating spin about their own axes with a maximum value of at least 4 twists per meter, and a core having a mean ellipticity in the range of 0.25 to 0.55, in such a way that the effects of birefringence of the fibers caused by the cabling process are significantly reduced.

A manufacturing process of a microstructured optical fibre including a void-containing region, includes the steps of: drawing a microstructured optical fibre along a longitudinal direction from a heated preform, wherein the optical fibre is continuously advanced along the longitudinal direction; directing a radiation beam at a longitudinal position in the longitudinal direction of the optical fibre so as to produce an interference pattern; detecting the interference pattern and producing at least one electrical detection signal corresponding to the interference pattern and including a plurality of signal fringe cycles; feeding the first detection signal into a first counter circuit; determining a first number of interference fringe increments in the plurality of signal wave fringe cycles of the at least one detection signal by using the first counter circuit; determining the outer diameter of the optical fibre, and controlling the microstructure of the optical fibre during advancement of the optical fibre. The step of controlling includes at least one step selected from: (a) controlling the first number of interference fringe increments within a reference number range of reference numbers of interference fringe increments, and (b) calculating a microstructure length value.

A process for manufacturing an optical fiber includes: drawing an optical waveguide from a glass preform; applying a layer of a first coating material on the optical waveguide; curing the first coating layer material to obtain a first coating layer; applying a layer of a second coating material onto the first coating layer; applying a layer of colored coating material onto the second coating layer; curing the second coating material and the colored coating material in a single step to obtain a second coating layer superposed on the first coating layer and a colored coating layer superposed on the second coating material layer, the obtained second coating layer having an elastic modulus higher than that of the first coating layer and lower than that of the colored coating layer. An optical fiber and an apparatus for producing it are also provided.
