Abstract:
Network signaling loads are controlled in a wireless network by monitoring traffic patterns at an access point and determining that the access point is a high turnover access point. A high turnover access point is determined based on an average time devices spend in a coverage area of the access point being below a threshold level. Beacon and/or probe response messages are generated that identify the access point as a high turnover access point. In addition, a turnover activity value may be generated for the access point and included in the beacon and/or response messages. A mobile device may determine whether to authenticate and associate with the access point based on the turnover activity value.

In one embodiment, a method for setting a clear channel assessment (CCA) threshold includes receiving, by a station from a first access point, a first message including an information element and determining a CCA threshold in accordance with the information element. The method also includes detecting a power level of a channel between the station and the access point to produce a first detected power level and comparing the first detected power level and the CCA threshold. Additionally, the method includes transmitting, by the station to the first access point on the channel, a second message when the detected power level is less than the CCA threshold.

A method for reducing authentication signaling in a wireless network includes identifying a plurality of access points in a network belonging to a group. An access request message is received from a first access point associated with a device being in range of the first access point. A determination is made whether the device has been authenticated within the group. A proxy accept message is sent to the to the first access point in response to the device being authenticated with the group without communicating with an authentication server for authentication of the device. A master access point may be used in performing the reduction of authentication signaling in the wireless network.
