Abstract: Objects such as personnel and vehicles are detected when they enter a sensing field produced by an antenna which is excited by oscillators operating in the VHF frequency band by producing cyclic variations in the frequency and in the amplitude of the oscillators exciting signal, which variations are in approximately quadrature phase relationship. The system responds to the correlation between the amplitude and the phase variation so as to produce an alarm indication of both the presence of an intruding object and its direction of movement, either toward or away from sensing the antenna.

Abstract: A system for tracking mail bags, letters, and parcels through a post office to determine mail processing times accurately as well as processing delays is disclosed. An unobtrusive transponder in the form of a card is located in letters or mail bags to be tracked. A number of stations are located along the route of the mail bags and irradiate these bags. Each station includes an array of three antennas disposed in mutually orthogonal relationship so as to irradiate the transponder notwithstanding its position. When irradiated by ultra high frequency (UHF) energy, the transponder is activated and transmits a VHF signal. The transponder includes a transmitting circuit which may be selectively set to transmit a signal having a frequency uniquely identifying the transponder. The system includes a receiver for tracking a plurality of transponders and providing an output as to when and if the transponder is tracked as it passes through each station along the mail route.

Abstract: In order to detect personnel and other intruding objects in open terrain, one or more long wire antennas are buried in the ground and located orthogonal to a vertically polarized souce of VHF radiation, such as a continuous wave transmitter which feeds an elevated vertical dipole. The intruder couples the radiation to the buried antenna which feeds a receiver. The receiver produces an output responsive to the characteristics of the radiation coupled to the antenna by the intruder to produce an alarm indicative of the presence of the intruder.

Abstract: A sensor system suitable for use as an intrusion detector or metal detector is described. The system transmits CW signals in the VHF or UHF frequency bands and receives modulation components of these signals which are being re-radiated from metal to metal bodies that are in contact with each other in or on the object to be detected. When the amplitude of these re-radiated modulation components exceeds a predetermined threshold, the presence of the object is indicated.

Abstract: An intrusion detection system is described wherein an antenna establishes a sensing field in the area to be secured. The field having at least two different principal frequencies in the VHF band. These frequencies are generated by heterodyning (double sideband modulation) or by frequency modulation. The cyclic variations in the frequency (frequency shift) or the amplitude variations in the generated signals due to an intruder perturbing the sensing field and are detected by monitoring each frequency and determining the frequency differential or amplitude differential therebetween. The frequency or amplitude differential signal is processed to indicate the presence of an intruder, as by producing an alarm output.
