Abstract: A hydraulic gerotor pump for an automatic transmission may comprise a housing and a gear set rotatably disposed within the housing. The gear set may comprise an inner gear and an outer gear having radially opposed intermeshing teeth that together define a plurality of circumferentially disposed variable volume pumping chambers therebetween. The housing may be made of a first aluminum-based material, and the inner gear and the outer gear of the gear set may be made of a second aluminum-based material. The linear coefficient of thermal expansion of the first aluminum-based material may be substantially the same as that of the second aluminum-based material.

Abstract: A fluid management system, or flow control system, for an automotive propulsion system is provided. The system includes a housing defining a sump configured to collect a volume of liquid and gaseous fluid and a pump configured to pump fluid from the sump. The pump defines a pump inlet and a pump outlet. A conduit is in fluid communication with the pump outlet. A passive valve is disposed within the conduit, the conduit defining a conduit outlet downstream of the passive valve, and the conduit further defining an orifice between the pump and the passive valve. The passive valve allows hydraulic fluid to flow past the valve, while substantially preventing air from flowing past the passive valve. The air is instead bled out through the orifice, along with some of the hydraulic fluid.

Abstract: A gerotor pump assembly, and a system and method for operating a gerotor pump assembly, result in a lubrication strategy for operating in a loss-of-prime mode. An inner drive gear may be rotated in a first direction and in a second opposite direction about an axis of rotation. The inner drive gear has a number of projections extending outwardly therefrom. An outer driven gear surrounds the inner drive gear and defines a number of recessions along an inner surface configured to engage with the projections of the inner drive gear. The outer driven gear and the inner drive gear further define at least one dynamically-changing fluid cavity therebetween. The inner drive gear and the outer driven gear define an oil transfer volume clearance between a projection and a recession in a fully engaged position. Oil is maintained within the oil transfer volume clearance as the inner drive gear is rotated.

Abstract: A cooling and lubrication system for a motor vehicle drive unit includes a drive unit sump, a first mechanically-driven pump, a second mechanically-driven pump, and an oil/air separator reservoir, among other possible components. The drive unit sump holds drive unit fluid. The first mechanically-driven pump fluidly communicates with the drive unit sump, and the second mechanically-driven pump fluidly communicates with the drive unit sump. The oil/air separator reservoir resides downstream of the first mechanically-driven pump and resides downstream of the second mechanically-driven pump.

Abstract: A hydraulic assembly includes a pump that is bi-rotationally driven by an output shaft of a transmission or transaxle and a hydraulic circuit that includes a pressure actuated control valve and a plurality of check valves. The check valves are arranged so that, regardless of the direction of rotation of the pump, the suction side of the pump is always in fluid communication with a sump and the pressure side of the pump is always in fluid communication with one of the inlet ports of the spool valve. In one direction of rotation of the pump, pressure in a line is supplied to a control port of a control valve to translate a control element to connect an outlet of the pump to the fluid system of the transmission or transaxle. In the other direction of rotation, no pressure is supplied to the control port and the control element, biased by a spring, connects the other outlet of the pump to the fluid system of the transmission.
