Abstract: A regeneration system for a vehicle includes: a particulate module configured to determine an amount of particulate trapped within a particulate filter, the particulate filter configured to filter particulate from exhaust output from an engine; and a regeneration control module configured to, in response to a determination that the amount of particulate trapped within the particulate filter is at least a predetermined amount: close a wastegate of a turbocharger; and open an EGR valve connected (a) to an intake system of the engine downstream of the turbocharger and (b) to upstream of the particulate filter, the closing of the wastegate and the opening of the EGR valve flowing air from (a) the intake system to (b) upstream of the particulate filter through the EGR valve without the air entering the engine.

Abstract: Systems and methods provide deceleration fuel cutoff regeneration of a gas particulate filter. A powertrain system includes an exhaust system containing the gas particulate filter, which is configured to collect particulate matter from an exhaust gas stream of the powertrain system. A temperature sensor is configured to monitor a temperature of the gas particulate filter. A loading monitor, such as a sensor and/or a model, is configured to provide a loading input of particulate loading of the gas particulate filter. At least one controller is configured to: determine, by comparing the loading input to stored values, whether the gas particulate filter requires the regeneration; effect a warmup of the gas particulate filter when the determination shows the gas particulate filter requires the regeneration; and initiate the regeneration when a value received from the temperature sensor meets a minimum threshold level.

Abstract: A system and method to implement a torque handoff between and electric machine and an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle are provided. To implement the torque handoff without undue delay, temperature of the exhaust gas is taken into consideration to determine whether an emissions stability criterium is met for handing off torque, and if the emissions stability criterium is met, the system and method are configured to handoff torque from the electric machine to the internal combustion engine. When the exhaust gas is sufficiently warm, it may be determined that the engine is operating with sufficiently low levels of hydrocarbons in accordance with emissions regulations, such that torque handoff may be made with confidence of maintaining emissions standards.

Abstract: A vehicle system includes an upstream oxygen monitoring module that monitors an upstream exhaust oxygen sensor and determines an upstream transition period based on a time at which the upstream exhaust oxygen sensor detects a rich-to-lean fueling transition. A delay determining module determines a delay period associated with the upstream exhaust oxygen sensor's detection of the fueling transition. An upstream correcting module determines a corrected upstream transition period based on the upstream transition period and the delay period. A downstream oxygen monitoring module monitors a downstream exhaust oxygen sensor and determines a downstream transition period based on the response of the downstream exhaust oxygen sensor to the fueling transition. An oxygen storage capacity (OSC) determining module determines an OSC period based on the corrected upstream transition period and the downstream transition period. A catalyst fault detection module selectively adjusts operating parameters of the engine based on the OSC period.
