摘要: Method and apparatus for producing an image on plain paper from image data using a photoreceptor. An image-wise distribution of charges is produced on the photoreceptor corresponding to the image data. A liquid ink having solid charged pigmented particles, the liquid ink having an effective glass transition temperature of less than 25 degrees Celsius is applied to the photoreceptor forming an image-wise distribution of the pigmented particles on the photoreceptor to form the image. The liquid ink has greater than seventy-five percent by volume fraction of solids in the image. A film forming means is positioned against the photoreceptor immediately following the application means to dry the image of the liquid ink to film forming within 0.5 seconds. The image is dried on the photoreceptor. The image is then transferred to an elastomeric transfer roller which forms a first transfer nip under pressure with the photoreceptor. The elastomeric transfer roller is heated to from 50 degrees Celsius to 100 degrees Celsius. Subsequently, the image is transferred to plain paper through a nip formed between a backup roller under pressure with the transfer roller. The release layer of the photoreceptor has a surface energy which is less than a surface energy of the elastomeric transfer roller which in turn is less than a surface energy of the liquid ink which in turn is less than a surface energy of the plain paper.

摘要: A method of producing an image on a final image receptor in a single pass electrophotographic system is provided. The method includes the steps of providing at least one toner development unit including a photoreceptive element and charged toner particles, and creating a toned image on the photoreceptive element that is transferred to an intermediate transfer member. The method further includes providing a transfer assist material development unit for applying a transfer assist material to at least a portion of the toned image to form a complete image layer on the intermediate transfer member, wherein the complete image layer is formed in a single pass of the intermediate transfer member. The method also includes contacting the complete image layer with a final image receptor while applying a bias that is sufficiently strong to transfer at least a portion of the complete image layer to the final image receptor.

摘要: A method of producing an image on a final image receptor from image data in a multiple pass electrophotographic system is provided. The method includes the steps of applying transfer assist material to an intermediate transfer member and providing at least one development unit including a photoreceptive element and charged toner particles. During each complete processing cycle of an intermediate transfer member, a toned image is created and transferred to the intermediate transfer member by application of a bias. In multiple processing cycles of the intermediate transfer member, the transfer assist material and the at least one toned image thereby form a composite image layer on the intermediate transfer member. The method further includes contacting the composite image layer with a final image receptor while applying a bias that is sufficiently strong to transfer at least a portion of the composite image layer to the final image receptor.

摘要: An imaging system and method incorporate an apparatus and method for cleaning developer liquid from an imaging substrate such as a photoreceptor. The system and method operate to move the imaging substrate in a first direction, form a latent electrostatic image on an imaging region of the imaging substrate, engage a development device in proximity with the imaging substrate, load a squeegee roller against the imaging substrate, the squeegee roller being driven by the imaging substrate in the first direction, apply developer liquid from the development device to the imaging region, thereby developing the latent electrostatic image, terminate application of developer liquid from the development device upon movement of a nonimaging region of the imaging substrate past the development device, wherein the disengagement of the development device leaves on the imaging substrate a second excess volume of the developer liquid, drive the squeegee roller in a second direction upon movement of the nonimaging region past the squeegee roller, the squeegee roller substantially removing the second excess volume of developer liquid, and transfer the developer liquid remaining on the imaging region to an imaging substrate, thereby forming a representation of an image.

摘要: An apparatus and method for removing excess developer liquid from an imaging substrate make use of a squeegee roller, and a mechanism for loading the squeegee roller against the imaging substrate. The squeegee roller removes the excess developer liquid from the imaging substrate at an upstream side of the squeegee roller relative to a direction of movement of the imaging substrate. A portion of the excess developer liquid can pass to a downstream side of the squeegee roller, however, and be transferred from the squeegee roller to the imaging substrate. A second developer liquid removal mechanism is provided to remove from the imaging substrate the portion of the excess developer liquid transferred from the squeegee roller. The second developer liquid removal mechanism may include a second squeegee roller mounted at a position adjacent the downstream side of the first squeegee roller. The second squeegee roller can include first and second squeegee sections that contact the imaging substrate at positions outside of the imaging region. The second squeegee roller can be driven in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the imaging substrate to effectively remove the excess developer liquid.

摘要: A testing procedure and method is provided for assessing the quality or acceptability of performance of individual liquid ink electrostatic toners on individual receptor surfaces. An approximately standard drop of the individual liquid toner is placed on the receptor to be tested. The drop is pressed onto the receptor and spread on the surface of the receptor (preferably before the drop has had time to partially evaporate or to have the liquid in the drop absorb or naturally spread on the receptor surface) under controlled conditions. The characteristics of the spread drop on the receptor surface are measured, and the characteristics are compared to parameters defining the characteristics expected from a liquid toner that define acceptable performance between toner and receptor. In this manner the relative performance of individual toners on individual receptor surfaces can be evaluated independent of electrostatic effects. This can be important, as the electrostatic effects bring another parameter of performance into evaluation of the compatibility of the toner and receptor and can misdirect research for adjusting their compatibility.
