Abstract: An annular rotating armature is presented. The annular rotating armature includes an armature winding having a plurality of coils, an armature support structure and a magnetic shield disposed between the armature winding and the armature support structure. The magnetic shield having a first magnetic shield ring, a second magnetic shield ring disposed concentric to the first magnetic shield ring and coupled to the first magnetic shield ring via a magnetic shield bridge link. An air gap is formed between the first magnetic shield ring and the second magnetic shield ring. The magnetic shield bridge link is disposed within the air gap. A superconducting generator including the annular rotating armature and a wind turbine having such superconducting generator are also presented.

Abstract: A portable neutron generator is provided that does not utilize liquid cooling. The portable neutron generator includes a vacuum chamber housing defining a vacuum chamber and an ion beam inlet. The portable neutron generator also includes a rotating target positioned within the vacuum chamber. The ion beam inlet is oriented to receive ions such that the ions impinge upon the rotating target to cause neutrons to be emitted. The rotating target comprises a copper alloy. The portable neutron generator also includes a motor core positioned within the vacuum chamber and coupled to the rotating target. A motor stator is electromagnetically coupled with the motor core. The motor core is configured to rotate the rotating target at greater than 200 Hz during operation.

Abstract: A system may include a motor that has a rotor and a stator. The system may include one or more sensors that measure a voltage signal of a winding of the stator. The system may include a processor that executes computer-executable instructions which, when executed, cause the processor to receive, from the one or more sensors, the voltage signal that includes an induced voltage signal associated with the winding of the stator, to determine a time constant associated with the induced voltage signal based on a decay pattern of the induced voltage signal, to determine a temperature of a rotor based on the time constant, and to adjust one or more operations of the motor based on the temperature.

Abstract: An electrical generator and method for operating the same are provided. Accordingly, the generator includes a non-rotatable component supporting a field winding assembly and a rotatable component oriented to rotate relative thereto. The generator also includes an armature winding assembly fixedly coupled to the rotatable component so as to rotate therewith during operation of the generator. The generator also includes a resistive assembly fixedly coupled to the rotatable component so as to rotate therewith during the operation of the generator. The resistive assembly electrically couples at least two separate phase windings of the armature winding assembly. The resistive assembly is also configured to introduce a resistance into the armature winding assembly in response to an electrical fault.

Abstract: A wind turbine includes a superconducting generator having an armature and a superconducting field winding set. The armature includes at least one multiphase armature winding set having a plurality of armature windings. The superconducting field winding set is separated by a gap from the armature. The superconducting field winding set includes a plurality of field windings, wherein one of the armature winding set and superconducting field winding set is connectable to rotate with a rotating component of the wind turbine and another of the armature and the superconducting field winding set being non-rotating. The wind turbine also includes a controllable power converter coupled to the at least one multiphase armature winding set and a controller configured to control switching operations of the controllable power converter to effect a phase shift among the plurality of armature windings.

Abstract: A drive system for driving an AC electric machine includes an electric machine power converter that provides a primary current excitation vector having a magnitude and angle to drive the AC electric machine. A control system separate from or incorporated into the power converter causes the power converter to inject a carrier signal to the AC electric machine that is superimposed onto the current vector and that generates a carrier response signal that has sensitivity to magnetic alignment information of the AC electric machine at its operating point, the carrier response signal providing a measurable magnetic alignment signature of the AC electric machine. The control system causes the power converter to inject the carrier signal at an injection angle between a constant flux injection angle and a constant torque injection angle, to reduce noise and/or vibration of the AC electric machine caused by the injected carrier signal.
