    Abstract: This invention relates to a method of forming an oxide coating on an aluminum surface having a controlled surface resistance and if sufficiently thick have an integral color by treating the aluminum surface with a neutral or slightly basic aqueous solution containing at least 0.001 gm/liter of a difficultly soluble magnesium compound expressed as MgCO.sub.3. The temperature of the bath should exceed 65.degree. C and the pH should range from about 7 to 9.

    Abstract: This invention is directed to a process for forming a hydrophobic and highly oleophilic coating on an aluminum surface which comprises treating the aluminum surface under aqueous alkaline conditions with a long chain aliphatic carboxylic acid (or an equivalent carboxylate compound), such as isostearic acid, which has one or more short secondary alkyl groups on or near the nonpolar end of the carboxylate compound. The coating can be formed by treating the surface with an aqueous alkaline solution which contains the carboxylic acid or the coating can be formed by mechanically deforming or upsetting the aluminum surface to expose a fresh aluminum surface to a carboxylic acid (or its equivalent) and a compound which generates alkaline conditions on the aluminum surface. In the latter instance, the carboxylic acid and alkaline compound is preferably incorporated into a metal-working lubricant used to facilitate deformation.

    Abstract: This invention relates to the formation of a hydrophobic and usually oleophilic coating on an aluminum surface by mechanically deforming or upsetting the aluminum surface to disrupt the natural oxide coating in the presence of alkaline agents and a long chain aliphatic carboxylic acid or other equivalent long chain aliphatic carboxylate compounds. Preferably, the carboxylic acid and alkaline agent are incorporated into a metal-working lubricant which is maintained on the aluminum surface during fabrication, such as rolling, so that the hydrophobic coating is formed simultaneously with fabrication and thereby avoid the necessity of a separate coating operation.
