The invention relates to a method for coating a metallic surface with an aqueous composition for pretreating before applying another coating or for treating said metallic surface. In addition to water, the composition contains: a) at least one hydrolyzable or at least partially hydrolyzed silane; b) at least one metal chelate; c) at least one organic film former, and; d) at least one long-chain alcohol that serves as a film forming aid. The unsoiled, scoured, cleaned and/or pretreated metallic surface is brought into contact with the aqueous composition so that a film forms on the metallic surface, which is subsequently dried, compacted in part or completely by film formation and, if necessary, additionally hardened. The dried and, if necessary, additionally hardened film has a layer thickness ranging from 0.01 to 10 μm. The invention also relates to corresponding aqueous compositions.

Aqueous compositions useful as pretreatments prior to painting and to reduce the formation of rust in the uncoated condition consist essentially of water, an organo-functional silane, a compound of a Group IV-B element, and optionally a polyvinyl alcohol, stabilizing agents, wetting agents, thickeners, and biocides, and have an alkaline pH>7. A process for treating a metal surface includes contacting the surface with such an aqueous composition. The compositions and processes were found to have further benefits in comparison to the zinc phosphate metal pretreatment thought to be the standard in the industry. Preferably, the pH of the compositions is alkaline, which has been found to improve the efficacy of a silane as a surface treatment to improve uniformity of paint adhesion. By operating in the alkaline pH range, it was found that flash rusting and/or blush rust were significantly reduced.

A method of coloring the surface of a tin-containing article is provided, the method comprising contacting at least a portion of the surface of the article with a solution comprising a thiosulphate, preferably under substantially neutral or acidic conditions. In one embodiment, the solution contains sodium thiosulphate and citric acid and further comprises a copper salt, together with acetone and/or glycerol. The method is preferably conducted at elevated temperatures, in particular by heating the solution to a temperature of from 45 to 85° C. The method is particularly suitable for the coloring of pewter articles, but may be applied to a wide range of tin-containing materials and tin alloys.

A surface-coated aluminum and zinc plated steel sheet in accordance with the present invention includes: a plated steel sheet; a composite coating film formed by applying an aqueous surface treatment agent on the plated steel sheet and drying the aqueous surface treatment agent. The aqueous surface treatment agent contains a water dispersible resin (A), a cobalt compound (B), and water, and has a pH within a range of 7.5 to 10. The composite coating film contains the water dispersible resin (A) and the cobalt compound (B). A percentage by mass of the water dispersible resin (A) in the composite coating film is 90% or more. A mass of the composite coating film per one surface of the plated steel sheet falls within a range of 0.5 to 3.5 g/m2.
