The display panels are stored within a display housing with respective viewing areas being at least partially overlapped to reduce storage space. The display panels automatically move out of the storage position into the viewing position in a notebook computer configuration when opening the computer. Similarly, the display panels automatically move into the storage position when closing the computer. The display unit includes a post. A system unit includes a cam. The cam defines a track within which the post moves. While the display unit rotates from the closed position to the open position the post moves along the track causing a display to move into its viewing position.

A security mechanism is provided, for use with portable equipment, such as a “notebook” type portable computer, which is to be coupled for use with stationary equipment, such as a port replicator or docking station. The security mechanism includes locking structures, located in complementary positions on the computer and the port replicator, for engaging each other to prevent theft by removal of the computer from the port replicator. The locking structures on the computer are standardized across a line of different computer models, so that the security mechanism is operative regardless of which of the different computer models is docked. Specifically, the locking structures of the various computers within the line of products are in corresponding positions on the computers, relative to the positions the computers occupy when docked. Therefore, the locking structures engage the same way, regardless of which computer of the line of products is docked. The security mechanism is manipulated by the presence of the computer being docked, so that the user is not required to manipulate the security mechanism separately from docking the computer.

The invention provides a single docking station structure which is usable for a set of different pieces of equipment having essentially similar interfaces, such as a manufacturer's line of portable (“notebook” or “laptop”) computer product models. A common first module supports interfaces with peripheral devices or the like. A model-specific second module, second from a set of second modules that correspond with various models from the line of portable computers, is coupled with the first module to support the portable computer. The second module supports the portable computer, so as to interface it directly with the interface on the first module. The second modules, preferably configured as trays for holding the portable computers, are very simple and inexpensive to manufacture. The trays can be stored next to the docking station (like magazines on a bookshelf). An identification system, which labels the different trays and cross-references them to the corresponding portable computers, allows for future changes in the manufacturer's product line, in which a new model of portable computer requires either a new tray or one of the previously existing trays. The invention is advantageous to manufacturers because it reduces the number and variety of docking station products required for use with the manufacturer's portable computers.

In the preferred embodiment, the docking station can accommodate at least a notebook computer and a palmtop-type handheld device. The docking station preferably facilitates a communication link between the handheld device and the notebook computer when the two devices are docked to the docking station. The communication link allows transmission and synchronization of data between the handheld device and the notebook computer. In a first embodiment of the invention, the docking station includes a docking connector that can mate with the notebook computer. The docking station also includes a docking cradle that can accommodate the handheld device. In the preferred embodiment, the docking cradle is configured to be adjustable in angle, so that the docked handheld device can be positioned at a desired angle. In the most preferred embodiment, the docking cradle includes a security feature that locks the handheld device to the docking cradle to prevent theft. In a second embodiment of the invention, the docking station includes a slot in the housing to accommodate the handheld device, instead of the docking cradle. In a third embodiment of the invention, the docking station is comprised of two modules, a primary docking module and a supplemental docking module. The primary docking module is configured to accommodate the notebook computer, while the supplemental docking module is configured to accommodate the palmtop-type handheld device.

The elevated rail or rails on the docking station interact with the recessed groove or grooves on the portable computer to guide the portable computer into a proper alignment with the housing of the docking station when the portable computer is placed on the platform and slid towards the housing so that the computer connector lines up with and connects to the docking connector. The docking station platform may have side walls or rotatable bumpers on the sides of the platform to provide coarse alignment between the docking station and the portable computer, and to prevent the portable computer from sliding off the platform during the alignment process. Preferably, the recessed groove or grooves are flared at the back edge of the portable computer to further assist in the alignment of the portable computer with the docking station. The docking station of the preferred and alternate embodiments of the invention can accommodate portable computers of different form factors and thus do not need to be replaced each time a new model of a personal computer is released with a different form factor.
