An electrical connector assembly is provided for mating with a complementary second connector. The assembly includes a housing mounting a terminal module for movement relative to the housing between a projecting position and a retracted position. The terminal module includes a dielectrical module body having a front mating end which projects from the housing and a rear mounting end which mounts the terminal module in the housing for movement between said positions. A plurality of conductive terminals are mounted on the module body and include front flexible contact ends projecting from the front mating end of the module body for engaging appropriate terminal contacts of the complementary second connector. When the second connector is mated with the connector assembly, the contacts of the second connector engage the front flexible contact ends of the terminals and move the terminal module from its projecting position to its retracted position.

Both the device and component have between them electrical and/or optical connections that are made when the component is mounted to the device, and broken when the component is demounted from the device. To break the connections requires the application of an extraction force in a direction opposite to that of insertion of the device through the receptacle. The component has a sprung mechanism that is biased against the device when an insertion force is applied to the component along the direction of insertion during mounting of the component to the device. The biasing of the sprung mechanism provides a spring bias force that contributes to the required extraction force to aid extraction of the component from the receptacle.

The female connector is movably retained in a frame-like holder by a self-actuating force reducing link that automatically couples a male connector inserted into the holder to the female connector with an insertion/withdrawal ratio in which the female connector moves away from the male connector in the terminal-mating direction more slowly than the male connector is inserted, thus allowing the connectors to be coupled over a longer than normal terminal-mating distance and reducing the insertion force needed to mate the terminals. The second edges are pushed toward the signal contacts by the grounding terminals because the grounding terminals are stronger than the signal contacts. A female connector (12) mateable with the male connector includes a dielectric member (22) and a number of signal contacts (24) and a number of grounding terminals (26) retained in the dielectric member in face-to-face relationship. The signal contacts straddle on a bottom surface (128) of the dielectric member. The male and the female connectors have a guiding means for guiding the connectors to correctly mate with each other.
