摘要: Both an inkjet printer and method are provided for controlling inkjet printing on a receiver. The inkjet printer includes a printhead having at least one nozzle for ejecting a stream of ink droplets, a droplet deflector for generating a flow of gas that impinges on the stream of ejected droplets to deflect the trajectories of the droplets, and a controller for varying the velocity of the gas flow in order to vary the degree of trajectory deflection so the droplets intended to print on a particular pixel in the receiver land on top of one another without elongation despite relative movement between the printhead and the receiver. The printer provides improved image quality and productivity while reducing image artifacts.

摘要: Apparatus is disclosed for controlling ink in a continuous ink jet printer in which a continuous stream of ink is emitted from a nozzle, wherein an ink stream generator establishes a continuous flow of ink in a stream such that the stream breaks up into a plurality of droplets at a position spaced from the ink stream generator. A stream deflector includes a body having a surface positioned adjacent to the stream between the ink stream generator and the position whereat the stream breaks up into droplets such that the stream contacts the surface and is deflected at least in part due to a tendency of liquid to contact a surface in proportion to liquid-solid free energy. The stream may be deflected substantially totally due to a tendency of liquid to contact a surface in proportion to liquid-solid free energy, or may be deflected partially due to a tendency of liquid to contact a surface in proportion to liquid-solid free energy and partially due to a reactive force on the stream exerted by the surface as a result of collision of the stream with the surface.

摘要: A drop-on-demand liquid emission device, such as for example an ink jet printer, includes a member movable through a path for driving liquid from the device, wherein the speed at which the member moves is reduced over the time period that liquid is being expelled. During that time period, a portion of the liquid flows through a passage away from the nozzle orifice. According to a feature of the present invention, a variable flow restrictor increases the resistance to flow through the passage during the time period that liquid is being expelled; thereby tending to compensate for the reduction of the liquid-expulsion force over the time period. The result is a reduction of undesirable satellite droplets following a main drop.

摘要: A method for manufacturing a mechanical grating device is presented. The device consists of a plurality of parallel-suspended ribbons that are deformed using, for example, an electrostatic force to actuate alternate ribbons. Actuation is a deformation of the ribbon resulting from an applied voltage to affect the height of the ribbons above a substrate. The method for manufacturing a mechanical gating device comprises the steps of: providing a spacer layer on top of a protective layer which covers a substrate; etching a channel entirely through the spacer layer; depositing a sacrificial layer at least as thick as the spacer layer; rendering the deposited sacrificial layer optically coplanar by chemical mechanical polishing; providing a tensile ribbon layer completely covering the area of the channel; providing a conductive layer patterned in the form of a grating; transferring the conductive layer pattern to the ribbon layer and etching entirely through the ribbon layer; and removing entirely the sacrificial layer from the channel.

摘要: Apparatus for controlling ink in an ink jet printer includes a print head of the type wherein ink forms a meniscus above a nozzle bore and spreads along an upper surface of the print head. The print head includes a substrate having an upper surface; an ink delivery channel below the substrate; and a nozzle bore through the substrate and opening below the substrate into the ink delivery channel to establish an ink flow path. A source of pressurized ink communicates with the ink delivery channel such that ink tends to form a meniscus on the upper surface of the heater. A resistive heater lies about at least a portion of the nozzle bore, the heater having an upper surface which is coplanar with a surrounding portion of the upper surface of the substrate, whereby the print head is flat in regions along an ink-to-solid contact line of the meniscus.

摘要: A continuous ink jet printer emits a continuous stream of ink from an ink stream generator. The stream breaks up into a plurality of droplets at a position spaced from the ink stream generator. A stream deflector includs a control surface positioned adjacent to the stream between the ink stream generator and the position whereat the stream breaks up into droplets such that the stream contacts the control surface and is thereby deflected due to a gain in free energy caused by physical contact between the ink in the stream and the control surface. Apparatus may be provided to modulate the position of the control surface to change the direction of the stream between a print direction and a non-print direction.

摘要: An inkjet printhead for printing an image on a printing medium is provided that includes a substrate having an interior and a nozzle face, a plurality of nozzles having outlets in the nozzle face, an electronically-operated droplet deflector disposed adjacent to each of the nozzle outlets, and feedthroughs for connecting the droplet deflector to power and image data circuits through the substrate interior. The feedthroughs include bores disposed through the substrate for accommodating conductors connected between the droplet deflectors and power and image data control circuits of the printer. The feedthroughs may take the form of bores either coated or filled with electrically-conductive material. The use of feedthroughs through the printhead substrate avoids the manufacture of an undesirably high density of connectors and conductors on the nozzle face and facilitates the manufacture of smooth and flat nozzle faces which are easily cleaned during the printing operation by wiping mechanisms. The power feedthroughs may be easily manufactured via MEMS bulk micromachining technology at the same time the substrate ink channels are formed.

摘要: A method of manufacturing a pump [10] for pumping various primary fluids. A body is formed from silicon dies [102,104]. A primary fluid channel [110] is formed in the body and a primary fluid supply [122] is coupled to the primary fluid channel [110] to supply a primary fluid to the primary fluid channel [110]. A mechanism for introducing a secondary fluid to an interface region of the primary fluid channel [110] is formed in the body. An energy delivery device is formed in the body to deliver energy to an interface between region between the primary fluid and the secondary fluid to create a thermal gradient along the fluid interface. The thermal gradient results in a surface tension gradient along the interface. The primary fluid will move to compensate for the surface tension gradient. Various semiconductor fabrication processes can be used to form the elements on the body.
