Abstract: A micro-LED driver applies a low baseline power (i.e., a baseline voltage or current) to pre-charge a micro-LED in a nominally-off (i.e., non-light-emitting) state in addition to applying an operating driving power to drive the micro-LED in a light-emitting state. By pre-charging the micro-LED prior to applying the operating driving power, the micro-LED driver significantly decreases the time between application of the operating driving power and onset of emission of light from the micro-LED. In some embodiments, the micro-LED driver applies an operating driving power having multiple phases of current density to reduce the time between application of the operating driving power and onset of emission of light from the micro-LED.

Abstract: An optical device includes a display that emits light through a polarization grating and then through a field lens toward a lightguide. Display light reflects from lightguide surfaces by total internal reflection (TIR). The display is mounted proximate to the lightguide. The optical device includes a first surface at an eye-side of the optical device and a second surface at a world-side. The optical device includes a first material having a first Abbe number and a second material having a second Abbe number different from the first Abbe number. The polarization grating, the first material, and the second material cause a color correction to light from the display or alter a chromatic aberration of the light from the display. A head mountable frame supports the display and the lightguide including the first and second materials.

Abstract: Head-mounted displays (HMDs) for virtual reality (VR) provide backlit illumination when the LCD rows corresponding to a non-dominant eye of the viewer are being updated. For example, when a human viewer operates a VR computer in the form of a smartphone with an LCD screen embedded in specialized goggles (e.g., Google Cardboard), the human viewer may specify that his/her right eye is dominant. In this case, the VR computer times the backlit illumination to be activated when the rows of LCD pixels in the field of view of the non-dominant, i.e., left, eye are being updated. When the rows of LCD pixels in the field of view of the dominant, i.e., right eye are being updated, the VR computer deactivates the backlit illumination.
